EING GOWNS GOOD RACE EASILY BUNS AWAY FROM SLEETH IN XA-TONIAS PRINCIPAL CONTEST. Ben Hampson Wins at last Opportunity Scores from Useful Two -year-olds. Owner Strang: Gets Himself Into Trouble. Latonia, Ky., October 17. Cool weather prevailed here this, afternoon, but it did not affect the attendance at Latonia, nor diminish interest in the racing. The card was again an unimportant one, seven dashes making up the offering, with an allowance affair at one mile and seventy yard:! serving as the head-liner. King Gorin ruled tin? favorite for it, was best and won easily from Sleeth, with Star Jasmine following closely. The winner was reserved behind Sleeth until sraight-ened away for the stretch drive, where he came away with evident ease. A poor band of maidens opened proceedings and Hen llainpson. the favorite, won from the outsider, Kenwnrd, with Quin heading the others. Charmeuse furnished the surprise of the second race, when, favored by a good send off, she was able to lead all the way. Clark M., so lightly regarded that he was grouped with others in the field, took second place. Opportunity gave a good exhibition In the third race, in which he carried his full weight and bent a fairly good band of two-year-olds. Corrigan and McKinneys Passing Fancy scored a lucky victory in the fifth race, when he just managed to get home in front of the suddenly-improved Bullion. The latter ran as if much the best and, but for getting caught in a jam in the first eighth, he would have won. Todays betting was again of goodly proportions. Trainer W. 15. Jennings of the A. K. Mae-omber Stable has been anxious to hnve Boots reach here mid with that end in view telegraphed last Saturday to have the horse shipped, but has not been advised yet if his wishes have been complied with. For several days the stewards here have been quietly investigating the matter of a circular letter sent and signed by G. L. Strang, in which the latter submits a proposition and offers to furnish supposedly winning information. The letter in question was sent to a person in California and Strang admits having sent it. As the stewards deemed it against the best practices of the turf, thay Issued a ruling this afternoon, which bars the .further entries of the Strang horses, embracing Samuel It. Meyer, Ithyme and Jane Struith. Strang is likewise part owner of Deliver and Chief Brown, but on the plea of William Perkins, who is also part owner, and is in no way connected with the sending out of the circular letter, to be allowed to dispose of Deliver and Jane Straith by auction. The officials will give the request consideration. Commenting on the affair, the stewards said: "The . turf was founded for the improvement of the thoroughbred, not for the purpose of fostering practices t of this kind. The stewards are of the opinion that - : tipping bureaus are detrimental to the welfare of racing and should be discouraged." Today work-outs over a fast track included tho , following: Anna.
