. t - : , 1 1 J. J. LILLIS TAKES THE STAKE RACE. Added Starter in the Georgetown Handicap and , Wins Going Away Boots Shipped West. Baltimore, Md., October 17. ,T. J. Lillis, an added starter, accounted for todays feature race at Laurel, the Georgetown Handicap, a dash of throe-quarters for all ages. There were eleven starters and Hanson was a heavily-backed favorite. In the parly running II. V. Whitneys Regina flattered her backers by taking the load and setting a fast pace. She retained command until straightened out in the homestretch, where the field bunched up and, in the final eighth, J. J. Lillis dashed out of the ruck to win going away by a length. The finish for second place was particularly close and the official placing made it Regina second and Startling third. Hanson left the barrier with the leaders and showed in second place until rounding the far turn, where he dropped back. He wax never prominent during the remainder of the race. Marse Henry, another added starter in the race, failed to cut any figure in the running. The colors of J. O. Talbott of Denver were prominent during the afternoon. This stable furnished the winners of the first two races in Cherry Ripe and Greentree. .After the latter won lie was advanced from ,400 to ,S05 by H. G. Bedwell and was bought in. The announcement has been made by general manager M. J. Winn that William H. Shelley will act as racing secretary at the meeting at Juarez next winter. G. P. Burke was an arrival at Laurel this morning. He is here in search of material for racing in Cuba next winter. Mr. Burke is training for a syndicate of wealthy Cubans. He has fifteen homes now at Oriental Park. The property of Senor Eugerio Alvarez, Senor Augusto Lozarvolle and Senor Amanda Elsholghon. Senor Alvarez is an enthusiastic sportsman and quite a baseball fan. He came up from Cuba to attend the championship games at Brooklyn and Boston and is now in New York. In former years he raced in England and France. Among the two-year-olds in Senor Alvarez stable is Fleeka Negra, a sister to Marion Goosby. Mr. Burke before returning to Cuba will engage a first class jockey to ride the horses lie is training. Flag Day pulled up lame after being worked this morning and was excused from starting by the stewards. Trainer W. H. Karrick has decided not to ride Warscher for a few weeks, and probably not for the remainder of the year. The lad has not been riding as well as he should and Karrick thought that a rest would do him good. H. J. McCarthy who is purchasing some thoroughbreds for some of his clients in the Green Spring Valley, with the idea of making hunters of them, this morning secured Aberfeldy from Eugene Finnegan. After Dryad pulled up yesterday it was discovered that the horse had severed one of his tendons of his foreleg and he was presented to a . local farmer, who will make an effort to patch him up. Soldier was advanced to ,105 and bought by Emil Herz after he won the seventh race yesterday. Herz is gathering a stable to race in Cuba. Boots was shipped to Kentucky this afternoon. He was accompanied by the groom, who has taken care of him all the year. Jockey A. Schuttinger has signed to ride for the Wickliffe Stable next year. Emil Herz advanced Costumer from 00 to 90j, but failed to secure him. Infidel II. changed hands after his victory. J. W. Hedrick bid him up from 00 to 00 and secured him at the latter figure. Shepherdess came out of the sixth race with a t broken leg and had to be destroyed.
