PROSPERITY AT LATONIA GREAT CROWD ENJOYS YESTERDAYS RACING DESPITE FORBIDDING WEATHER. i Cudgel Runs a Capital Race in the Queen City Handicap Bayberry Candle Defeats King Gorin Much Interest in the Latonia Cup. Cincinnati. O., October 25. A record breaking crowd for this meeting was in attendance :it Latonia this afternoon, despite the bleak weather. ITad conditions been more favorable, it is doubtful if the commodious course would have been adequate to accommodate the crowd that would have been present. A threatened downpour held off after an early slight wetting of the course and fast time was recorded after the second race. The card was an extra good one and brought together some of the best in these parts. The contests were enjoyable and aroused considerable enthusiasm. John AA Schorrs two-year-old Cudgel gave a sparkling performance in the Queen City Handicap, at one mile, which he won. carrying 120 pounds and going the distance in 1:30. Mary lielle was the runner up and Butterscotch II. headed the others. Bavberry Candle was another to show a fine performance, when she shouldered 110 pounds and won from King Jorin in fast time. Followers of favorites had a profitable day, as most of the winners were first choices. It. II. Anderson was an exception. He was so lightly regarded that he was coupled with Raggedy Man in the field and furnished a surprise when he scored in the last stride over Schedule. Commauretta had a close call in the second race, but managed to get up in the last stride to overhaul Booker Hill. J. J. Murdock. racing in his best form, was by far the best in the third race and won as his rider pleased from some fairly good sprinters that made up the Held. There will be an auction sale here for miscellaneously owned horses on Friday and Saturday. The sales will be held in the paddock before the racing. The Latonia Cup race is attracting much interest and, according to present indications, a field of at least seven starters will contest for the rich stakes and valuable plate that goes to the winner. E. It. Itradley of Idle Hour Farm, near Lexington, donated 250 to the fund for the late John K. Stringfields widow. After Commaurettas victory in the second race she was udvnueed from ail entered price of hB100 to 00 and was bought in. It. 1. Dickinson did the bidding. Frank J. Hruen, who is looking after the Havana tracks affairs here, has decided on November 7 as the day for sending out the special train of horses intended for racing at the Cuban track. Among those who will ship at that time and have signified an intention of racing in Havana are: F. Rector, AV. F. Schulte, J. I. Everman, A. L. Austin, Frazier and Harris, R. J. Powers, T. M. Irvin, AV. P. Reed, U. S. AVishard, G. Arviu, G. 15. Jennings and C. Hawk. According to trainer V. 1$. Jennings, of the A. K. Macomber stable, that owner contemplates shipping a dozen horses to race in Havana next winter. Considerable interest attaches to the meeting of the Kentucky State Racing Commission tomorrow in the club house at the Latonia track, to allot dates for 1017 to the different tracks in Kentucky. It is expected that other turf matters will come up for consideration. Chairman Johnson N. Camden, who has recently passed through a siege of severe illness, is not expected to be present at the meeting. Jockey F. Robinson will come here from Laurel to ridePif Jr, in the Latonia Cup to be run next Saturday, according to owner R. L. Baker. Several additional owners have announced an intention of shipping next Sunday to Tijuana, where racing is announced to begin November 11. John Lowe, who has been visiting here for some time, will leave next Sunday for San Mateo, Cal., where he has the horses of C. AV. Clark resting.
