The Ellicott City Handicap, a dash of one mile and a sixteenth, for three-year-olds with ,500 added, was featured at Laurel this afternoon. James Butlers heavily-weighted Spur was third, a head behind Malachite. Spur showed a splendid performance under the weigbt. He had a bit of bad luck in the race, starting away slowly from the barrier and being bumped and forced wide by Air Man, while rounding the first turn after getting to the pacemaker. King Neptune, when entering the homo-stretch. Spur began to tire and at the end he was losing ground with every stride. The selling handicap at three-quarters brought a well-matched lield to the post. Gloaming proved best and, after making all the pace, beat Buck Shot by a scant half length. Like in a majority of races of this kind, there were several "good things," but Olyn G. never left the outcome in doubt, as he sprinted into a decisive leail soon after the start and was never headed. Lottery came from last place to finish second and his showing was such as to make it plainly evident that he will not go into winter quarters a maiden. Sam Jackson made his first appearance of the year in the fifth race. Ho was never prominent and at the finish was last of all and lame when he pulled up. J. It. Baker was after Robinson to ride Pif Jr. in the same race and the lad may go to Latonia if he hears from Mr. Baker in time. The two-year-old Aixen, in the stable of AA If. Karrick, which was taken down with pneumonia a few days ago, has responded to treatment anil is improving. Dr. Henry J. McCarthy, a veterinarian from the Green Spring Aalley, treated the filly.
