HANOVIA IN WINNING MOOD TAKES THE NEW ORLEANS FEATURE RACE FROM BOB HENSLEY IN FAST FINISH. Track Still Heavy and Weather Disagreeable — Lu- cile P. Takes a Race — Pleasureville Defeats Greetings — Gentilly Handicap Weights. New Orleans. La.. January 17. — E. T. Coltons Hanovia. ridden by jockey Borel. accounted for the v lie handicap whieli was the outstanding feature i.n the Fail Grounds eard of six races. Hob III— It J landing i;i second place and Jacoba third. Hanovia ran to her best form and was Riven an intelligent ride, which contributed la a measure to her success. Sh - came witli a great rush in the last Quarter, but at that Hanovia might not have won had Hoffman on Hob Hensley kept his mount to his task a bit longer, instead of indulging him vhen lie seemingly thought that he had the race won a.fter disposing of Jacoba. An added incident of todays racing came immediately after the fifth race, when W. Collins, who had the mount on Greetings, lodged a claim of foul against W. rump, rider of Pleasureville the winner. The claim was the result of rumps action in riding Ileasureville directly toward Greetings, when the latter was about to pass into the lead after rounding the stretch turn. Both racers came together with a sharp impact and it was generally believed that the winner would be disqualified, but Judge Murphy did not consider the interference sufficient to warrant the displacement of the winner. The racing was fairly exciting, contention in most of the races being close during the earlier running. Conforming to the custom of giving races of a mile or over on Wednesday, the program for to-day WH so arranged. G. II. Knebolkamps colors were successful for the firsf HUBS at the meeting when Lueile I*. scored r decisive style in the opener. Emma Stuart, a heavily-backed one. took the second. Iatty Regan. the favorite in this race, was cut down and was afte-ward presented to a local veterinarian, who will try to save him for a saddle horse. El Pato repeated a former victory in the third and Infidel II. showed a sudden form reversal to stay the mile and an eighth in the closing race and win from Chivator. The track was in the worst possible condition and. with the exception of those in the mile handicap, the starters were of ordinary caliber. Betting activities were restricted, due in a measure to tin-bad going. The backers of favorites fared poorly. as most of the choices were bowled over. Because of the poor track, owners again felt reluctance to enter in races, resulting in only six races being carded for tomorrow, and it required quite an effort on the part of the secretary and his staff of assistants to get these completed. G. W. J. Bissell. the wealthy Pittsburgh horseman, who is racing an extensive string of horses at the Fair Grounds, was an arrival this morning ami will remain for the rest of the meeting. Dundreary, which was a carded starter in the last race, had to be excused from starting on account of lameness. Jockey MeAtee was taken suddenly ill after dismounting from Jacoba and required medical attention. Charles W. Clark and his party will arrive Friday from San .Mateo and will probably remain until close of racing lure. The heavy loss"s that the layers have sustained -iace the opening have caused a number of the 1 ric-makers to drop out of the Palm Garden ranks. Secretary McLennan announced this afternoon the weights to the Gentilly Handicap to be. run on Saturday. They are as follows: All Smiles. Ill: Krtmiloy. MS; Courtly Lass.
