LATONIA ENTRIES FLOWING IN FAST. Indications That Latonia Championship Stakes Nominations May Total Four Hundred. Cincinnati. 0.. February 17. — Although nearly two weeks remain in which breeders and yearling owners can still make their nominations to the 0,000 Latonia Championship Stakes for three-year-olds, to be run in the autumn of IMP, general Manager Hachmeistcr of the Latonia Jockey Club is greatly pleased with the results to date. As ill this case, most breeders and horsemen usually wait until the last few days in which to s ml in their entries to stake races so that the 111 entries which he has thus far received has far exceeded his expectations. The largest entry to date i-c that of Hal Price lleadley. the popular yoitag president of the Thoroughbred Horse Association. lleadley ha. sent in tiie names of fifty-one colts and fillies and his heck for $."il0 to cover the entrance fee for all. The first nominator to the big event was A. B. Hancock, the Virginia and Kentucky breeder, who sent in a list of thirty -three colts and fillies. Mr. Hancock, as the real sponsor for the stak- . hastened to get his entries in to show his willingness to be one of the subscribers. Eighteen colts and fillies nominated by Mr. Hancock are by his sire Celt. The other domestic breds entered arc by Ballot. Vub. i in. Fair Play. Plaudit. Peep oDay and Prince Abated. Nine of his entries are yearlings, the pick of the Knglish breeding farms, by Iii!;. iai In-. S..ntrv. Spanish Prince. Myron. Adam P.ede. Junior and Spearmint. Lottery in Breeding Thoroughbreds. Speaking of Bpearariat should be an encouragement t i breeders to put in the best of their yearlings in this big stake. So often it turns out that the cheap priced and rather meek looking yearling is the champion in his three-year-old form, that hardly one of them should be neglected. Spearmint was one of those sickly -looking y . ar-lings and he sold for a paltry 81.868, which was cheap for any kind of a yearling in England in his day. Brea as a two-yeur-old he was no world beater, but in his three -year-old form he won the Kpsom Derby, was then taken across the channel and won the Orand Prix, being the first English horse to win this French classic- in twenty years. Columns could be written regarding the feats of three year-olds, which have been sold for a mere-song in their yearling form. The breeding of thoroughbred horses is the biggest lottery in the world, and the man who will lot take advantage of every opportunity to get as much as possible-for his yearlings is lacking in business acumen. An entry to the 0,000 Latonia Championship Stakes is bound to make his colt or filly sell for more in the auction ring or at private sale. In the list nominated by Hal Price Headley. twenty-seven yearlings are by Star Shoot, fourteen colts and thirteen fillies being in the list. Fourteen of Heaclleys nominations are by the great sire Vnclc. Other sires represented in his entries are Ballot. Vulcain. Jack Atkin. Bey Hindoo. Joe-Carey. Tim Payne. Rapid Water and Duke of Ormonde. Qeaecal manager Hachinister received a lone entry in his mail the other day from a man in Boston unknown and unheard of by turf goer-. He has a yearling by the- horse Sea King am: he slid in his letter that he thought ten dollars was cheap enough to hae a chance to will 5. MM, so he was going to enter his lone yearling. The Latonia Jockey Club officials are ipiite- confident now that the entry list will exceed BM and may go to 400. Entries to this event and also the spring stake races at Latonia ami Douglas Park close on Thursday. March 1.
