PREPARING FOR CAMPAIGN IN CANADA. Large Stables Going Ahead Regardless of Threatened Change in Legislation. The prospects of legislation adverse to racing has terminated the building of any new race tracks on paper or otherwise in Canada of late, says the Toronto Globe. It is doubtful if, in reality, a soil will be turned until the bills now under consideration at Ottawa are disposed of in April. The pro-miseuous issuing of licenses is undoubtedly respoiisi bio for the present conditions and too mueh eare can net be exercised in this respect in the future to avoid further opposition to the sport. If promoters of the fly-by-night variety, with question able reputations are permitted to run tho-gauntlet in this country, thoroughbred racing is doomed. They have licit the slightest regard for the future welfare of the turf in Canada or the thoroughbred breeding industry of the country, which is at present in a healthy state. On the contrary the men in question, some of whom have already been invading our fair country, are of the get-rich-quick type, and who will not stop at anything in order to accomplish their ends. Too much racing and trouble among the racing interests has ruined the sport in many parts of America, and a repetition in Canada should be discouraged in every way possible. Some of those deeply interested in the movement against racing are credited with offering to erase* large sums that the tracks will remain closed this spring. "That hope is father to the thought with them." is the lieliof in other quarters and in the meantime the large Canadian stables are going right along as usual making preparations for the coming years campaign.
