WEIGHTS IN ENGLANDS BIG STEEPLECHASE. Weights for several important English .jumping stake races appeared in the Racing Calendar. I-, bruary 1. Most notable of these is the "War Natiunal." which is this years substitute for the Liverpool Bread National. It is to be run at Gat- dp-wick. March 21. and over the same distance as the ■ famous Liverpool race. Thirty-six horses were handicapped at weights ranging from 175 pounds on the crack Templ-downey down to 133 pounds on five bottom -weight candidates. Three American-bred horses are in the list, R. Lambtons Alfred Noble, by Garry Herrmann— Ethel Pace, 184 pounds; E. Pattersons Limerock, by Rock Sand- -Aaaot Lvle. ISO pounds, and P. Heybourrs Toiler, by siavi — Ihida, IBS pounds. Last years winner. Vermouth, is given ±73 pounds. Ally Bteper, t lew-inner of the last real Grand National, has been assigned 104 pounds. The value of the substitute race. S2.C08, and a 80 rap, compares illy with the endowment of the great Liverpool race which it supplants, but, under the pressure of the great war. English owners are glad to run for anything offered.
