RECORD CROWD AT ORIENTAL PARK. Largest Gathering That Ever Witnessed Sport in Cuba See Some Excellent Racing. Havana. Cuba. Fe-brunry 2."i. — A record breaking Sunday crowd, made up in part of the big colony of tourists, saw some- splendiel sport at Oriental Park this afternoon. The big grandstand was pac-ke-d and over 1.000 automobiles were- parked in tin- enclosure back of the plaza. It was far the largest crowil that ever witnessed the races in Cuba. Many distinguished men were present, among them the-Ame-rican minister, William Gonzales, Commodore-Pringle of the American gaatbeat Dixie, which lies in Havana harbor. Frank Steinhart anel A. C. Elgin ami a big party, which arrived from Key West yesterday. The feature race at a mile and fifty yards, in which the be-st horses on the grounds went to the past, furnished a stirring contest. Ninety Simplex was returned the winner, getting up in the- final strieles after a sinew-straining finish to beat Ite-no i head. H. Woods old Woolsthorpe gelding Sureget. ran back to his last good race- and won the opening dash. He was away well and. epiickly opening a big lead, easily held his oppone-nts safe throughout ind was unile-r re-straint at the- finish. The favorite. Bunie-e. had no mishaps and ejuit baelly in the itretch. The second race went to Granaelo. Ball eiuickly took him to the- front and kept him there to the finish, slightly eased him up in the- closing stride*. Asama was the choice in the betting, but was taken back right after the start and. although closing up fast in the stretch, had no chance to overtake the flying leader. Jockey Wingfield Rides Brilliantly. Purple- anel Gold in the third race was anothe-r favorite to disappoint, for after racing on the outside of the leaders rounding the far turn tire-el badly ne-ar the end. Golden Chance, under a good ride by H. Wingfield. saved ground on all the turns anil held on gamely to the end. Pass On was fast overhauling the leadiTs and finished a good third. Joe-key Wingfield was again in the limelight in tin- fourth races, when he piloted to victory W. F. Schultes Iffizzi. well backed by her connections. The Burgomaster filly quickly raceel into the lead and hung on gamely whi-n Challenged in the stretch. Devonshire Dolly ran a dull race. The fifth race, at a mile, was a rattling good e-on-te-st. in which Lord Byron, after having been saved to the strete-h. closed up with a rush, took the lead in the last eighth and won going away. Sun Kist was a strong favorite in the closing race, but never had a chance, being outpaced throughout. Frosty Face sprinted into a long early lead and. after being passe-el. came again in the last sixteenth and outstayed the fast coming Lyncher.:. The stewards issued a ruling which brought turf banishment to Patsy Brannigau for oiTeiisive touting.
