AFTERMATH OF KENTUCKY DERBY. Louisville. Ky.. May 14. — The victory of Omar Khayyam in the K ntucky Derby of Saturday adiii vcl a long-cherished ambition of traim r Charles Patterson. It was Patterson who saddled Ornament when he was beaten a neck by Typhoon II. in the Derby of 1.S07 in one of the most thrilling duels in the history of the race. The success of Omar Khayyam was doubly pleas ing to 1atterson because it was he who went to England and bought the colt at Newmarket in the fall of 191a. on liehalf of C. K. G. Billings and Frederick Johnson, paying ,500 for him. Omar Khayyam was bred by Sir John Robinson. Marco, the sire of Omar Khayyam, was a good stake winner and the sire of Neil Gow. Kappa, Marcovil and other good horses. The victory of this horse will have a tendency to increase the re-siH-ct of American owners for the English im porta -tions. Charles Borel. who piloted Omar Khayyam to victory, said a month ago the colt would win the Derby if he got a fast track to run over. After the race Borel said he thought it was all off when he was jammed into the fence, but the colt recovered quickly and did everything asked of him. The amount handled in the mutuels on the Derby this year exceeded that of former seasons by a good deal and totaled 00,305. The total handled on the day also exceeded that of the best former day.
