EMPIRE CITY TRACK SOFT. HEAVY RAINS AFFECT THE GOING AND LEADS TO WHOLESALE SCEATCHING. Ballad Wins tho Tarrytown Stakes Easily, Defeating tho Favorite Straight Forward St. Isidore and Lady Eotha Take Their Races. New York, July 10. .Tunics . Butlers consistent tlirec-ycar-old Ballad scored liis second straight victory of the moetiiifr when he was returned an oasy winner of the Tarrytown Stakes, tlie mile dash under selling conditions which featured the afternoons program at the Yonkers course. The victory was hardly a profitable one for the Butler establishment, as the ,000 net value to the winner was mora than offset by the ,205 the stable was forced to pay before leading the son of Ballot back to the stable. Entered for ,000, ho was bid up to ,200 by Harry Fink, but the customary advance bought him in. This race brought about the first unset of tho afternoon, when the It. T. Wilson stable furnished a well beaten public choice in Straight Forward. Tills three-year-old was strongly supported on the strength of his latest performance at Aqueduct, when lie equalled Itoamers record for the seven-eighths distance. His race today proved most disappointing. Away well, he quickly shot to the front, was rated in that position until in the final eighth, but when called on to withstand the challenge of Ballad, failed badly. The Tarrytown Stakes was. run for the eighth time- today and its history in condensed form is here shown: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1007 Old Honesty ..3 117 J. Lee ,620 1:40 100S. No racing at Empire City In 1011, 1012 and 1013. Run at Belmont Park in 1015. Tlfcr hcavyxains of Sunday made the track heavy in TSptfts, though It proved fairly good near the outside. The uncertain going caused many withdrawals and the card was literally cut to pieces by the number of scratches. Sharing interest with the selling stake feature, but attracting a better class of contestants, was the WilHairisbridge Handicap, an overnight dash, at about three-quarters, which fell to the Brighton Stables St. Isidore. The victory proved a most popular one, as the winner was a well supported public choice. Fast Closing Rush Wins for St. Isidore. St. Isidore proved the quickest as the webbing ascended, but after enjoying a brief lead, he was joined and passed by Ed Cudihee, which set out to mako the pace. This racer made the running until in the final sixteenth, when he tired badly and St. Isidore closing up with a great end rush, got up to win drawing clear. The winner was forced wide at the head of the stretch and hampered somewhat from the three-sixteenth to the eighth post.. The west scored its first victory of the meeting, When W. II. Bakers Lady Rotha was returned winner in the second race. This mare made all the running and, though her margin of victory was a decisive one, she was ridden out at the end. Jockey J. Williams, contract rider for the M. L. Schwartz stable, motored to his home in Harrisburg yesterday, where he will rest until the August meeting at Saratoga. Carter Hall and Peter Conroy were arrivals from Baltimore and will depart for ThornclilTe Park Wednesday, where the first named will serve in an official capacity. Tuesday. July 24, lias been set aside by the Em-piroCity Racing Association as Red Cross day, and a special Red Cross Handicap, framed to attract the best long-distance stars in training, will be the feature.. As was the case at Aqueduct, the free gatoHvill be absolutely suspended and the proceeds will be turned over to the Red Cross. The sale of Water Witch and Ellison by Ilarrv Fink to William Caliill has not been consummated, owing to the fact that these horses were taken out of selliug races by Fink. The Kentucky rules forbid their changing ownera until thirty days have elapsed. Cahill, however, will train the horses for their present owner. A shipment of thoroughbreds will leave the Jamaica track for Saratoga Springs on Wednesday. The consignment includes the stables of Willis S. Kilmer, J. Garson, W. Ownsby and A. Blakeley. The following owners have already engaged stable roont. for the five day meeting of the Staten Island Fair Association: N. Byer with six, T. Shaunon, six; L. Fuestel, four; Quincy Stable, ten; W SJicedy, three; J. Kelly, five; A. S. Nelson, 3; Cairnsmuir Stable, four.
