WHEN STARS OF THIS YEAR MEET Prospect of Great Racing in 1918 vith Kocrlcss, Omar Khayyam and Cudgel in Conflict. New York, December 11. Since the good horse Cudgel has been purchased by J. K. L. Ross, it is safe to say there is going to le some rare good racing in this state next spring, when the three stars, Hourless, Omar Khayyam and Cudgel meet, in races. There is every reason to believe Cudgel will remain in these parts, there being little prospects of racing in Canada. Many Kentuckians believe that Cudgel will take the measure of Hourless and Omar Khayyam now that he is in the hands of such an astute trainer as H. G. Bedwell. What is more, Bedwell will not avoid a meeting witli the best when he has a good horse, consequently tiie chance of the trio of stars coming together on more than one occasion is enhanced. Such prospects speak well for interest in the sport next year, in addition to the possibilities of close contention for lienors in the three-year-old division with such horses as Papp, Sun Briar. Escoba, Tippity AVitchet, AAar Cloud, Lanius and others that may develop between their two and three-year-old form. Rarely in the history of racing has there been more than two three-year-olds or four-year-olds that have stood out from all others in one year, but last season there were three, for Cudgel is entitled to be well considered with both Hourless and Omar Khayyam. Not since the year of Domino, Dobbins and Henry of Navarre has there been three such horses as the stars of 1917. There have been many well-matched horses and mares like Salvator and Tenny. Freeland and Miss AAoodford and others, but to have three iu one year happens but once in a geaeration.
