FAVORITES PROVE FICKLE All but One Fail Their Backers at Havre de Grace Yesterday. a Dr. Campbell Saves the Talent from Utter Rout — Kilix Wins the Steeplechase. Havre de Crace. Md.. April 23.— Racing lure t -. day was given over to th- selling plater division, all of the seven races licing either under selling or claiming conditions. It was a disastrous day for hackers of favorites, the choices lieing howled over with a regularity that nearly resulted in a Waterloo for the talent. Dr. Campbell saving them from utter rout by scoring a hard earned victory in the sixth race. This a Is proved lo lie the best contest of the afternoon. Dr. Campbell set the early pace and, after licing passed by Grey Eagle, hung on resolutely to the final eighth, where he again forged to the front anl gamely outstayed Miss Krnter. which was but a head in advance of Grey Eagle. Dr. CamplicH weight told on him in the heavy inside going anil his performance was all the more meritorious. Edward McBrides Trap Rock filly. Mrs. Kate Lcydecker. easily won the two-year-old dash, which opened the days sport. The filly outran her oppo nents from start to finish and drew away into a big lead in the last eighth. Kilix proved a surprise in the steeplechase. The race was considered to lie bet we -n Fair Mac. Xew Haven and Rucehrook. Kilix was one of the extreme outsiders in the betting, but this fact did not prevent him from showing the way for nearly the entire distance. He fenced well and when Fair Mac challenged hung on in resolute fashion and held the Browne racer safe. Kacehrook lost his rider at the ninth jump while in a contending position. Another upset came with the running of the third race, in this instance J. M. Ziinmer furnishing the surprise when his old gelding. Preefaa Lynn, beat the equal choices. Dervish and Sam Pickett. The latter set the pace at a fast clip with Dervish in close pursuit. Preston Lynn got away slowly, but made up ground quickly and overtaking the loaders in the stretch, passed them in the last eighth of a fast closing drive. Dervish tired from his early efforts racing Sam Pickett into defeat. A big band of maidens started in the fourth race, with J. K. L. Ross well-bred English filly. Alth a. the public choice. The filly had a rough trip next to the rail in the heavy going and tired at the end. Duke of Devonshire, from the stable of W. Viau. owner of Omar Khayyam, was the winner, leading all the way. holding the Whitney representative safe at nil stages. K. F. Carmans Ideal was another favorite to dis-apiMiint the form hackers, her defeat coming in the fifth race, the winner turning up in Willow Be-dotte, which caught the leaders tiring and beat them to the winning line by a small margin. Sam Lewis saddled the winner of the last rae»-when his own horse. Boxer, found the going to his liking and won quite easily over footsie ami Serena ta. SEVERAL TALB0TT HORSES TURNED OUT. S. A.
