| OPENING DAY AT PIMLICO -• Spring Meeting Begins Under Adverse Weather Conditions. a Hauberk Wins Rennert Handicap — Ral Parr Is Successful in Two Races. — -• Baltimore. Mil.. May L — The fifteen days spring meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club was ushered in today at Pimlico under adverse weather condi tions. a light rain falling throughout the afternoon. However, a splendid attendance was on hand when the bugle called the horses to the post in the oi»c:i-ing race, the grandstand being filled, whil-- the clubhouse was crowded with the members and guest ; of this famous organization. The Rennert Handicap was the main feature o" the opening day program and, while the heavy track reduced the field to six starters, those that wen: to the post were evenly matched. J. F. Sweeney furnished the winner in Hauberk, which dominated the running practically all the way to win drawin : away. Philippic was second and Damrosch third. Ral Parr had the honor of winning the opening rac- of the meeting, his newly -named Col. Valor tine, which formerly raced as Dr. Muck, alalia,. Urey Eagle. 4une Bug. Sam Pickett and other lair three-year-olds. C. Mergler had the mount on tie-Parr representative, kept him in forward position from the start and when he made his move in the homestretch Col. Valentine easily raced into a big load to win easing up. 1ncles Lassie, a first-time starter from the stable of W. R. Coo. made an impressive debut in the second race, decisively heating Ophelia, after making a wide turn entering the homestretch. Mr. Coe paid ,700 for Incles Lassie at the Saratoga sales Inst summer, the filly being one of a splendid collection of the get of Incle, which Headley and Miller disposed of for remarkably high prices. The Inaugural Steeplechase was a thriller from start to finish. Warlock winning in the final strides of a sensational finish with Fair Mac. Sixty Four iiad set a fast pace from the start, but tired after clearing the last jump. All but one of the eight starters finished the course and the contestants were closely bunched all the way. W. It. Coes P.et. the favorite, was eased up when beaten. Warlocks victory was the second success of the day scored by the Parr stable. The second two-year-old race of the afternoon saw II. P. Whitneys speedy filly resson win ia easy fashion over Esquimau and The Wanderer. Jockey McAtee. who has been showing form in the saddle this spring, has joined the E. R. McLean stable at Pimlico and will accoiminny trainer John Schorr to Xew York at the conclusion of the present meeting. A big upset occurred in the sixth race. H. P. Whitneys Tumbler and U. A. Cochrans Raaaaahaa. both backed to the exclusion of the others in Horace, being decisively lieaten by Sunny Slope. Oulv four faced the starter in the closing race and Obolus found the going to his liking and won iu good style. C. Kummer rode two winners during the afternoon. OMAR KHAYYAM A LATE ARRIVAL. The most distinguished late arrivals at Pimlico from Penning are Omar Khayyam and Wcsty Hogan. which are W. Viaus candidates for the Piml;... Spring Handicap. Both are in splendid condition and will lie ready for their stake engagements. Duke or Devonshire will in all probability carry Mr. Viaus colors in tne Preakness. 4. F. Richardson is also among the late arrival* from Benning. bringing a band of twenty odd hoi r 1 to race under the silks of J. Liimsdea. the Canadian turfman. Lumsdou has two Preakness candidates in Manilla and K. of K. For the Pimlico Spring Handicap Bachelors Bliss will be Lnmsdeus standard bearer. Tom Shaw was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. He came over from Xew York to take ill the opening days sport. Among If* stables which will be shipiied from Havre de t.race to Xew York some day this week are the strings owned by M. F. Sheedy. C. Bussey. Emil Herz. A. 11. Vivell. H. H. Browne and .lack Tharaby. The latter has turned down several offer, for his fast filly Fannie Mehau since her good showing in Maryland. M. J. Minn came over from I-iurel tiiis morning. He reports that the track at I at;rel has been resoiied since last fall and that there are s.ill other improvements which will lie made to the plan during the summer. He leaves for Louisville Friday morning and will remain in Kentucky until the conclusion of the Churchill Downs meeting before returning to New York. Jockeys Buxton and Schuttinger were arrivals from Xew York. They bring the news that War Cloud trained especially well for the Kentucky Derby and before lieing shipped to lj uisv-ille he worked a mile iu l:40i and on another occasion a mile and a quarter in 2:13. The plans are. provid ing the colt makes a good showing in tne Derby, to ship him back to Pimlico to start iu the Preakiies Stakes. K. U. Shaffer claimed Say at Havre ib- Urace after he was beaten in the seventh race yesterday. Say will probably remain in the Johnson barn, as the latter said he was perfectly satisfied to lose Ma horse at the price Shaffer claimed him for. The change in the going at Pimlico was rvsjion-sible for numerous withdrawals in the different races. There are more jumpers here this spring than ever ■afMa and the club will make an extra effort to cater to the wants of the cross-country coiitingeitt. It is said that James Butler contemplates turning several of his racers into steeplechasers.
