IS BEATEN ♦ Runs Third to Motor Cop and Flags in Stuyvesant Handicap. ♦ Sun Briars Race a Big Disappointment to His Many Eastern Admirers. ♦ New York, May 21. — Metroixilitan racegm-rs were attracted to Jamaica today to witness the first meeting of the year of Jack" Hare Jr.. winner of one division of the Preakness Stakes, and Sun Briar. W. S. Kilmers leading money-winning two-year-old of last year, in the Stuyvesant Handicap. Although Sun Briar returned from Kentucky with his reputation somewhat tarnished by his M-or race in his only start at Lexington and his subsequent failure to start in the Kentucky Derby, nevertheless, he seemed to have plenty of admirers today and .vent to the post almost an equal choice with Jack Han-Jr. Tliese admirers were, however, doomed to keen disappointment, for Sun Briar, although ap|i»:iring fit and ready, never seemed to extend himself and was at 110 time a contender, running in sixth posi-tion throughout. With Jack Han- Jr. it was different and. although beaten, the game Applegate racer was not disgraced. He was shuffled back at the half, was in the deeiiest going all the way. but came around the leader in the homestretch, was gaining with every stride and would have la-en second in another stride. The winner turned up in A. K. MaeomlM-rs Motor Cop. a fine-looking son of Incle. which won his only start as a two-year-old and was considered quite promising. Motor Cop was away slowly, but displaying grand speed, gained rapidly after rounding the last turn and. disposing of .lags in the last eighth, drew away into a safe lead. Flags race was a meritorious one and In? was not lieateu until in the last few strides. The Stuyvesant Handicap was rim for the third time today, its brief history being as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. MM Fernrock 107 E. Ha vnes. .3.10 1:13 1917 Julialeon 112ilt. Troxler. 3.175 1:14*3 191S Motor Cop ll." J. Loftus. . . 2.S2."i 1 :12/5 "I just dont know what is the trouble with Sun Briar." said Willie Knapp after the running of the Stuyvesant Handicap. "He would not extend him-I self in any part of the race, yet he pulls up sound as a dollar. He is just a mystery. Last year lie was a blinkers horse and this year he does not seem to like them. He is a mystery to me and I think hes a mystery to trainer Mo Daniel and Mr. Kilmer. The horse does fine and works well, yet he does not seem to run in races." FRANK WEIR HAD NO EXCUSES. Frank Weir had no excuses for Jack Hare Jr. any more than he was in the deepest going all the way and his long race of a mile and an eighth iu the Preakness might have dulled his speed a little. The track, too. might have been a trifle against him. Motor Cop. the winner of the Stuyvesant, has jumped into prominence with his one race. He showed both speed and gameness. "He beat a fast horse iu Flags." said Albert Simons, trainer of the latter and. considering the state of the track, the first two horses ran exceptional races. After seven attempts, in which he never finished lower than fourth. Green Mint, a son of Spearmint. bred in England by Harry Payne Whitney, finally earned brackets today in the opening race. He raced wide all the wav. but, under vigorous riding on tin-part of Taplin. closed a big gap and held August Belmonts good looking Fair Play filly Virago safe in the final drive. The winner of the second race came from the stable of It. F. Carman, his filly Ideal triumphing over the favorite. Dr. Cainplioll. with Burlingamo. a neglected outsider, finishing in third place Ideal showed the most sliced, hading all the way and was drawing away at the finish. It was a close thing for second place. Dr. Campbell tiring from his efforts chasing the winner and barely outlasted Burlingame. Another Spearmint colt graduated from the ranks of maidens, when Johren boat Sna|s!raon II. in a keenly contested struggle in the third race. Johren was ridden with splendid judgment and reserved in close pursuit of the pacemaker S;ia|idragon M. until entering the stretch, where Robinson t ok the Whitney colt to the front and the race was over. Jusqu an Bout was a beaten-off third, seven lengths behind the leaders. Judge Wingfield. a recent arrival from Iimlico, where he raced well, secured a hard earned victory-over Sky Pilot in the sixth race, only a small margin separating the two at the end of a fiercely contested closing drive. John Sanfords colors were seen in front for the first time this year, when his Ogden colt. Ite. in his initial turf effort, was an easy winner of the closing race.
