RACING HAS A STRANGE FASCINATION From Human Interest Standpoint It Outclasses All Other Sports, Declues Writer. There are several tilings aliout race tracks that have a strange fascination f„r mo," says James Kiiinot in the .New York Mail. "The horses and the betting and that sort of thing just hold a casual interi st. "Hid you ever get out to the track in the gray dawn of the morning— some time around .". oclock. when the real exercising and conditioning is done? "If you an- i vit at Saratoga during August go out to Horse Haven in the wee small hours. Horse Haven is the exercise track at the Spa. "Men and horses assume weird forms In the gray of the dawn. Ilor e flit around the traek like ghosts. Along the rail you will see the tireless Hookers with the inevitable watches. It is a sight worth while and one that you will not soon forget. "Anoiher thing that fascinates me on the turf is the study of the race track crowds. To appreciate this study, however, one has to make it ou many tracks. "I like to go out across the track opposite the grandstand and watch the crowd from the infield as a rare ;s being run. It is a wonderful psychological study in emotion. "Th.se fans of patrons of the track, the people that follow the horses everywhere, tell many a story. One get* |» know them and catalogue them. 1 have stood in the infield at -New Orleans and gazed into a hundred faces I know from Saratoga. Belmont Park or Churchill Downs, yet in uoi one of which there was a sign of recognition for me. •There is much more to the turf than the mere running of races. From a human interest standpoint, it outclasses all other branches of tijoi-t."
