1 * 1 A.-K. MACOMBER HOLDS A STRONG HAND Jinx That Has Pursued Popular Turfman Vanishes —Has a Great Trio of Turf Stars. New York. May 31. — The spell of ill-luck which seems to have clouded the Macomber stable of horses for the past two vears. now appears to be lifting and there is reason to believe Mr. Macomber has a good chance to head the list of winning owners this year. In War Cloud, Motor Cop and Stargaser, Mr. Macomber has a trio of most promising racers and it is iu them that he will place his chief dependuiicc . though he has other good ones. It was. of course, unfortunate that War Cloud did not win the rich Kentucky Derby, but the horse was not at fault, as he afterwards proved by travel ing from Kentucky to Pimlico and winning the. first half of the Preakness from a high -class hand. At Jamaica. Walter Jennings, Mr. Macombers trainer, sent Motor Cop out in a sprint race and the son of Incle scored over a fast band of horses, beating among others. Flags, which has since proved n horse of exceptional speed. Tuesday the Macomber colors were carried by Stargaaer In the Garden City Handicap, and horses like Tea Caddy and Rhine Maiden fell before him. Stargazer was bumped at the start of the race and those who had financial concern in his showing almost gave up the ghost. Iielieving he could hardly make up the ground lost in such a short sprint as six and a half furlongs. But they did not know the kind of horse carrying the Macomber colors. After the bumping. Ixiftus did not rush his mount after the flying leaders, but rode steadily and with rare good judgment. Not until well into the stretch did Loftns make a decisive move and. when he did, there was a flash of red and white stri|«s running through the homestretch that defied defeat. If Stargazer made up an inch of ground in the last quarter of a mile, he made up six lengths. He proved worthy of the confidence placed in him bv his owner and trainer, and lived up to the work he had had in preparation for the race, when he ran seven-eighths in 1:27 and a fraction. Those are but three of the Macomber stars. He has more. one. Hollister. which will run in the Ken tucky Handicap Saturday at Douglas Park and is thought by his connections to have a good chance to win. "I am going down to Kentucky to ride Hollister in the handicap just to give Cudgel a chance to show how good he really is." declared jockey Buxton, before leaving for Louisville.
