ENGLAND AND FRANCE CONTRASTED I have lieen asked how it is that although the British thoroughbred is generally acknowledged to Is- the liest in the world, stallion fees in Frame are higher than in this country in some instances. It was patetcd out* that, in spite of the stoppage of raciug in France for two whole years, and notwithstanding the fact that during the last two year* racing has been confined to "test ra -es. without public attendance or the pari-mutuel. at all events four stallions now command a 400 sovereigns fee. They are Sundridge. Sans Souci II.. Sardanapale and Teddy. As against that the four leading stallions in the United Kingdom command a fee of only : OD guineas — lolymelus, loinmern, Sunstar and The Tetrarch. The reason for this undoubtedly is that breeders in France are assured that after the war matters will right themselves, for they are well aware that racing and breeding will receive every con ideration on the part of the government. Li this country, on the other hand, owing to the vacillating jMiliey of the powers that be. breeders of bloodstock fear to dip too deeply, knowing the influence of the "unco guid" on iioliticians: hence the difference in stallions fees in favor of France. — "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
