This important three-year-old fixture of eastern racing was first run in 1S67 at Jerome Park and continued there to 1S90. Then it was transferred to Morris Bark. J where it was an annual feature until 1903. w.iea it was taken over by the Westchester Racing Association on the establishment of Belmont Bark. The names of many of the most noted horses of the turf are found among the list of winners of the Belmont, the last, but not least. lM-ing August Belmonts great colt. Hourlcss. now retired to the stud. When racing was at its height of popularity from 1900 to 1907 the Belmont Stakes was worth all the way from 0,000 to close to 3,000 to the winner. As a sign of returning prosM rity of the turf the Belmont Stakes this year will have a gross value of aliout .0,000. a considerable increase over the last few years. For todays race a small, but high-class. Ueld has been named to start and a contest worthy of the lM*st traditions of this famous race is in prospect.
