j J : ! i CARD OF ORDINARY QUALITY ♦ And Unsettled Weather Reduces Belmont Park Attendance. • Hendrie Beats Sunflash II. in Spirited Contest — Loftus Rides Two Winners. * New York, June 14. — A thre* horse race featured an ordinary overnight card of races at Belmont Park today, the juogue Handicap, in which Hendrie. Sunflash II. and Gloomy Gus. Polymelians conqueror, competed. The attendance was slight, owing to the unsettled weather and the quality of the card offered. A small sprinkling of the fair sex dotted the stands, while the remainder of the crowd was composed of the lawn layers and regulars. Hendrie proved best in the feature, by capturing that race from the favorite Sunflash II. . after running out at the head of the stretch. Loftus rode the big horse admirably. Closer to the leaders than usual, the Weir chestnut drew clear on the turn, but ran out, losing his advantage. Loftus then straightened hint out and lie finished with a rush, wearing the leader down iu the last eighth. Gloomy Gus was always outrun. Syrdarya carried the colors of his owner ami breeder J. G. Greener to victory in the opening "race this afternoon. It was a dash of five-eighths of a mile over the straight course, for two-year-old maidens and Syrdarya was the public choice. Macombers Hand Grenade proved a winning combination in the see end race, in which Polymelian was a strong favorite despite ids heavy imi ost of 140 pounds. It Was the consensus of opinion that the weight caused Polymelians defeat, as he seemed to labor under his heavy burden and tired iierccptibly in the last eighth after setting a fast early pace. Lift us kept Hand Grenade under restraint in the early running and. when he called on him in the stretch, the English-bred eolt resiKMided in true race horse fashion and drew away into a safe lead at the end. The lightly weighted Trophy ran a sensational nice to finish second, closing up an immense gap. TOO MUCH WEIGHT BEAT AIR MAN. The third race furnished an interesting struggle between a good hand of horses, of which Air Man and Nominee received the hulk of the public sttp-IMirt. Air Man ran a g»MMl race, setting and forcing the pace until the last eighth, when- he tired under his heavy impost and was passed by Nominee, which won going away. Ellison might have fared better with a stronger rider. Kiss Again, a fine-liM king daughter of Tracery — ■ Stolen Kiss, bred in England by Sir Mark Sykes. from the stable of W. R. OM, Iwat a band of youngsters of her own sex in the fifth race. Sam Hildreth had the satisfaction of seeing his colors carried to victory for the first time today. when his three-year-old Princeps, a half-brother to that corking good racer Priscillian. easily accounted for the mile dash that ended the days priMvedings. Capt. A. C. Schwartz was a visitor at the track today in uniform. The three foremost riders in the country jKtrtici-pated in the Quogue Handicap today iu Loftus. Lyke aud Robinson. A. R.
