June 19. — All of the ten or more three-year-olds that will go to the post at "Fair i I.atonia" on Saturday next to contest for the fame i and the fortune that will go with the winning of . he thirty-sixth running of the Latouia Derbv, i ire now "on the scene of conflict. Albert Simons. I who trains a division of the Harry Payne Whitney I stable, arrived farsl night from New York with Johren. the son of Spearmint — M.noola. whoso re- i cent achievi incuts in winning the Suburban Handicap and I.clmont Stakes at Helmont Park have had tiie effect of so materially increasing the esteem ; :u which he is helil for the race, that it is now an open question as to whether he or Escoba. the pride and reliance of the Kentiickians, will |x-accorded the honors of favoritism for the big race. Jockey F. Robinson, who will have the mount on Johren Saturday, came west with trainer Simons. Robinson is the contract rider for the Whitney stable and has been riding Johren iu his important ••astern engagements, so the colt will have the ix-nefit of a first-class rider who understands hi:n thoroughly. Johren is so thoroughly fit as a result of his recent races, that little will be done with him between now and Saturday in the way of exacting work. The Helmont Stakes, which he won in -noli conviiKin-T fasiiien last Satunlay. was at one mile and three eighths, only one eighth less than tiie stamina-testing mile and one-half of the approaching Derby contest. That Johren will lie suited by the Derby route is a foregone conclusion, base:! upoji what he already has done iu the way of actual racing. In this leaped he has some edge on his rivals, none of which has raced farther than oni mile and a |Ui:rter. Exterminator, which won the Kentucky Derby last month for Willis MmrBe Kilmer, arrived at I.atonia Monday evening in charge of W. Me-Daniel, who assists his brother Henry in training the Kilmer horses. Tuesday morning he was out for work ■iver the Latania track and gallojied five-eighths .u l:0 i. Exterminator has raced but once since his Kentucky Derby victory and that was at an astern Hunt Club meeting, where he failed to show .is good a perf rmance as expected of a Derby win met. This morning he was sent the full Derby route of a mile and a half in 2:3!— ,. ONLY TWO EASTERN REPRESENTATIVES. It now seems liialy that the eastern representation !n the bis race will be confined to Johren and Kxterminator. Nothing has been heard from Sunny slape. which raced so well iu the colors of William Martin at Pimlico in finishing second iu the 1reak-ness Stakes, that it was thought he would surely come west fyir the big Latonia event. The half lozen eligiblts for the race that II. O. Bedwell nominated in behalf of J. K. L. Ross evidently failed to train up to expectations, as Redwell has seemingly abandoned his idea of shipping any of them west for the race. And Max Hirscli. trainer for G. W. I/oft. has evidently come to the conclusion that Cum Sail, which he had been planning to send west to run in the race, will not do to pit •ig-iinst Johren and the other leading candidates for the big event. ! It now 1-Miks as if the Derby field will be made up of the following: Horse. Owner. Weight WHrea H. P. Whitney m Kxterminator W. S. Kilmer l;U Kscoba K. D. Alexander li2 Pitt utter ■• J- Long l-j Herald H. H. Hewitt 1T2 Auriini J. Livingston t3S American Eagle T. C. McDowell UJ I.ig Enough X. K. Nichols ];*•_» Helliager D. Raymond yj.2 Uuke of Savoy H. P. Headley lT5 J.hr. -ns P.eimont Stakes victory entailed a ponnl-y of five pounds, which is included in his impost :f 127 iMiunds. Exterminator is the only other prospective starter penalized under the conditions of the race. He would have to carry only 119 poun:ls hut tor iiis Kentucky Derby victory. beano. Aurum and Herald, tlm-c of the pros iwctive Derby contenders, will receive their final bit of preparation for the big race this afternoon in taking part in the Highland Club Handicap, one of the features of the Ladies day card at Latonia. T! is is a race of one mile and one-eighth and. if Baeuaa emerges from it the victor under top weight of 114 pounds, it will be an indication that the ■laaaa in which ha figured on the op. ning day of ill- Latonia meeting has left no ill effects. With such stars of the turf as Johren, Escoba, rYeerotter and Exterminator figuring as certain starters, to say nothing of tiie lesser lights laeltodetj in the list of probable contenders, this years renew, tl of L-Uonias most famous race will not suffer by eompariaaa with its thirty-fire predecessors, in the general /.pinion of those who devote attention to tie- affairs of the turf. Trainer Will McDaniel nnmnnuvd that jockey W. Ki.app. who rode Exterminator when he won the Kentucky Derby, would be here to pilot the Kilmer colt in Saturdays race.
