VETERAN TRAINER MATT ALLEN DEAD New York. June 27. — Matthew Allen, one of the last of the old generation of race norse trainers, died at his home, in Brooklyn yesterday. He was eighty-three years old. "Matt" Allen was born in Nashville. Tenn. His entire life was siient around race tracks, and handling thoroughbred horses. He trained for George Ehret, the Brooklyn brewer, the late James Buchanan Brady, Robert It. Keeuan and several other owners. He trained the famous Banaster, which won the Brooklyn Handicap in 1859. The following year he went to England for Jas. R. Keenc, where he was quite successful. After returning to this country, he took charge of the stable of Mr. Brady and later trained for Mr. Ehret. who owned tin-great thoroughbred Yorkville Belle. Mr. Brady wa the last man Allen trained for and he had charge of that stable until 1910. Last year lie was appointed official timer of the Jockey Club and resigned during the recent Belmont Park meeting through failing health. Last December, while walking near his home, he fell and was severely injured. He leaves a widow and one son.
