1 1 1 1 ; 1 FAVORITES FAIL AT LATONIA ♦ Major Parke Runs Unplaced to Horses He Beat Recently. ♦ J. J. Murdock Springs a Surprise in the Feature Race — Aurum Defeats Courtship. ♦ Latonia. Ky., June 27. — Improved weather and track conditions was the order this afternoon and it was instrumental in bringing out the full force of racegoers here. The racing, while spirited, brought with it many upsets and form reversals. The most pronounced was that in the third race, in which Legal was an easy winner and Major Parke, which beat him easily in a preceding start, finishing behind the placed ones. The betting barometer indicated Legals improvement and he sjiowed high sliced from the outset, whereas Major Parke lacked it. Sandes riding on him iu the stretch was decidedly amatuerish. In contrast, was that riders performance on Aurum iu the following race, in which he won after a rousing drive to get up in time to overhaul Courtship in the last few strides. His victory marked tin-first success that this highly regarded Livingston owned three-year-old has achieved this year. At that, his victory today was a lucky one and partially brought about by Pools graciousness in bringing Courtship wide on the stretch turn and enabling Aurum to save any amount of ground there. The three-quarters handicap, designed as the feature, added to the many upsets of the afternoon, when J. J. Murdock. beaten off in his last start, won with ridiculous ease. Fruit Cake just lasting to beat Prince of Conio by a nose for second place. Outside of Legal, favorites were again in eclipse and their repeated failures was decidedly costly to the public and talent alike. The failure of choices began iu the initial race, when Byrne was soundly beaten. His failure was. however, due to getting away so poorly, that his chances were practically disposed of at the start. George J. Icings Wyn-dover was the winner of the race, having led all the way and having speed in reserve at the end. Peerless One, carrying the McLean silks, was tiie choice in the second race, but he never proved dangerous and. from a slow beginning, was far back throughout. Sirocco winning from Clairvoyant and Xcpe. MABY H. AN EASY WINNER. Mary II. accounted for the sixth race, after she had led Tze-Lsi for the entire way. Queen Apple. the favorite, landed third after a stormy effort to weave through the field. The final race found the talent supporting Whirling Dun in confident fashion, but he never figured in the running. Smart Money, extensively regarded by his connections, winning in easy style from Rig Fellow, with Baby Lynch taking third and the favorite far back. Harry Kelly had to be withdrawn at the last minute on account of lameness. He had been going well in his training previously. The friends of Grover C. Baker wen- shocked to learn this afternoon that he had suffered a mental breakdown and had to be pla -ed in a private sanitarium. It is thought that with a complete rest of several weeks he will recover. Several of the fair associations in Kentucky. Indiana and Illinois, as well as Ohio, where running races for a short period are intended, are making extra efforts to induce horsemen to ship to lliei.-tracks. Several of the inducements are liberal in the extreme. The purses range in value up to 00. Many of those who contemplate remaining at Latonia. because of failure to secure stabl • room at Saratoga, will probably ship several of their charges to engage in the fair racing. Most recent advices from New Orleans is that the racing situation there is unchanged from what it was last winter, with every prospect of it remaining so throughout next winter. Tom Brown is trying to secure a carload of horses to go to Atlanta. G:l., where they propose a one day ran- meeting July 4. The Atlanta track offers to" defray shipping expenses of the horses to and from Latonia. A
