MORE FALL RACING IN NEW YORK Increased Interest in Sport and Great Number of Horses Available Responsible for Movement Xew York July 1 Applications for autumn dates after the close of lielmont Park September i 1 have been made by the Metropolitan Racing As ¬ sociation and the Queens County Jockey Oliib and it is believed the Empire City management will also make a request for a fall meeting if it has not already done so soThese These applications will be acted upon by the Jockey Club at one of its regular meetings between now and the end of August The Metropolitan As ¬ sociation has requested the dates during the latter days of September following Helmont Park The Aqueduct management has specified no particular dales hut wishes to run an individual meeting the same as in the spring and not a joint meeting Manager M J Winn of the Empire City track is willing to accept either distinctive dates or run jointly in thy interests of all concerned as was the case 1ist year That yearThat there will be in extension of racing is the general impression on all sides and the season may run until well along into October if all requests are considered favorably by the Jockey Club ClubThe The present interest in racing and the exceed ¬ ingly increased attendance over that of last year is the impetus given the local association for re ¬ questing fall meetings at all tracks Last year there was some doubt almut fall meetings being successful and it was tried out jointly at Aqueduct and proved a success Conditions are much more favorable this year consequently everything points to a longer extension than last year yearSecretary Secretary Edwards of the Jamaica track said there was no apparent reason why racing should not be held in this section throughout October if necessary as was customary years ago He declared there was evory reison to encourage fall racing on account of the great number of horses for all tracks and that conflicting dates with Maryland had little or no bearing on Xew York as they represented entirely different sections and neither would be injured in the way of patronage patronageNO NO SHORTAGE OF MATERIAL MATERIALThe The plea heretofore said Mr Edwards has been shortage of horses There is no such reason this year all stables being overrun with racing material September and October are beautiful months for racing so far as the weather is con ¬ cerned hence we can see no reason why the season could not be extended extendedThe The views of President James Shevlin of the Aqueduct track coincide with those expressed by Secret arv Edwards He buliuves Aqueduct Jamaica and Empire Cirv should all have at the least ten days racing in tho autumn autumnThis This would advance the sport until the middle of Octolxr and possibly a trifle beyond said Mr Shevlin I see no reason for a joint meeting when there are so many open days in the autumn which could be utilized for the benefit of horsemen and all concerned I am also in favor of providing some rich stakes for the autumn to keep the good horses in this section and make it interesting for owners ownersIt It can readily he seen that it would be necessary to give good sized purses and stakes to retain the present interest in the sport from a public stand ¬ point Racing must be kept up to a high standard in Xew York the hub of the racing world or it will fall off in patronage and the local tracks cannot stand a decided drop in gate receipts receiptsI I will be perfectly satisfied with a grant of ten days in the fall for Aqueduct and I dont doubt but the other tracks will welcome the same kind of an allotment There was a time years ago when racing in Xew York greatly affected the sport in Maryland both as regards the class of horses engaged and the attendance Hut those days have passed owing to sreatly improved conditions en ¬ gendered bv the growing assurance that the per ¬ petuation of the thoroughbred is necessary as an economic aid to the welfare and safety of this
