COST OF LIVING IS GOING UP UPThe The cost of living so far as food is concerned has increased no less than 03 per cent iu the last five years Iu one month from April li to May 15 of this year it increased 3 per cent These official figures were made public at the Labor department iu Washington a few days ago agoComparison Comparison of food prices in effect in May a year ago and May of this year shows that food as a wliole increased 5 per cent in cost despite the fact that seven of the twentyfive articles of food listed declined in price to a considerable degree Pota ¬ toes led the decline costing 01 per cent less in May of this year than one year ago These lower prices were more than balanced however by in ¬ creases in the other articles listed Boiling beef increased liO per cent in price corn meal 30 per cent milk 1C per cent pork chops 20 per cent and so on onSince Since May 1913 some foods have increased more than 100 per cent in price While the average increase for all the articles of food listed is 03 per cent every article of food increased at least 38 per cent The last figure represents the rise in the price of potatoes the smallest increase on the list
