TWENTY LEADING AMERICAN SIRES IN MONEY MONEYWON WON BY THEIR PROGENY IN THE FIRST FIRSTHALF HALF OF THE YEAR 1918 One of the most remarkable and outstanding features of American thoroughbred breeding for the last eight years lias been the persistent and lluctuating rivalry between the English sire Star Shoot and the American sire Broomstick for the proud position of premier sire of North America No other sire lias had a look in for the leadership Star Shoot has been the leader in four of the seven years prior to 1018 and Broomstick in the other three There is no change from this longstanding condition this year The termination of the lirst half of the racing year on July 1 found Broomstick well in advance of all com ¬ petitors but tenacious as death Star Shoot upheld traditions and is second to the famous son of Ben Brush and Elf The latter owes his present supremacy to his superb son Cudgel which had Avon more than half of the 51008 standing to his credit on July 1 As between the two it is probable that Star Shoot may triumph again for the simple reason that numerically his family so far outnumbers that of Broomstick On the date named fortyfour of his sons and daughters had won money as compared with twentytwo of Broomsticks For a sire of his transccndant merit Broomstick is given scanty oppor ¬ tunities in the stud a thing that passes understanding understandingThird Third in the list of twenty leading sires is the English horse McGce with the Kentucky Derby win rer Exterminator as his chief money gatherer McGee was an extremely fast race horse He is a grandson of St Simon and tits in well in our breeding Next to him is Star Shoots best son Uncle It was a stroke of bud luck for him that his noble son Old Rosebud fell sick ami so far has been unable to take part in the racing of this year Had he remained as good as lie was last year it is quite within the range of probabilities that Uncle might now be the leading American sire himself As time passes and his family expands he is probably destined to ultimately figure in that exalted position A number of his sons which sold for high prices at Saratoga last year have yet to make their debut in racing and may be in reserve for the big Saratoga stake races for twoyearolds Should one of them prove victorious in the Hopeful Stakes he would be hard to beat this year that race being sure to net the winner 35000 or more Due largely to the fast and highclass threeyearold Jack Hare Jr Marathon is next to Uncle in the winning list and represents a line now nourishing and highly popular in England Marathon is only a year older than Uncle and has abundant time before him iii which to gather fame through sending others like Jack Hare Jr to the races racesFurther Further down in the list the crack English sire Polymelus makes a good showing with six repre ¬ sentatives all of which have won one or more races His son War Cloud is one of our best threeyear olds and a young horse of great speed Another Polymcliaii although not raced much has proved himself to be an excellent handicap horse under high weight Descendants of Cyllene are scarce in our breeding and these grandsons of his may prove factors of great influence when retired to the stud Next year we shall see what one son of Polymolus may promise when George W Wingtield seiicls UouOy woods7 first two yearolds east to engage in racing Spearmint is another English sire represented because his son Johren is one of the chief money winners of the year Something might be said of the other horses composing the aristocratic twenty
