BIG CONTRIBUTION TO RED CROSS FUND Estimated That Nearly 100000 Was Realized During Recent Latonia Meeting Cincinnati 0 July 20 Racing contributed hand ¬ somely to the treasury of the United States and to the American Red Cross fund during the wonder ¬ fully successful meeting just concluded at the Latonia race track General Manager John Hach meister has turned over to the duly accredited in ¬ ternal revenue officials for this district the sum of 2585475 which represents the tax of ten per cent levied by the government on admissions and other similar charges This is an average of about 1000 per day for each of the twentysix days of the meeting meetingIt It is estimated that the Red Cross fund will benefit from the meeting to the extent of nearly 100000 The lions share of this amount will rep ¬ resent the Latonia Jockey Clubs contribution to the mammoth fund of 300000 which the racing interests of Kentucky are pledged to raise for the lied Cross during the present racing season In addition owners whose horses shared in the purse distribu ¬ tion during the Latonia meeting contributed a sum slightly in excess of 20000 under an arrangement by which ten per cent of their winnings is syste ¬ matically deducted and set aside for Red Cross purposes Employees of the track and the jockeys made an aggregate contribution to the fund of near ¬ ly 10000 under the provision by which ten per cent of their earnings is devoted to this purpose purposeIii Iii the fall racing in Kentucky the same arrangement will he in effect and the lied Cross fund will be benefitted additionally All that is being done in this direction by the racing people is being done voluntarily and wholeheartedly llacing folks have always been proverbially generous towards worthy causes when the hat is passed around but in this particular campaign for the benefit of the lied Cross they have fairly outdone themselves themselvesFollowing Following is a list of the principal contributions to the Red Cross purposes were made last spring it was upon the assumption that there would be thp normal amount of racing in tho state If as has bocn suggested in some quarters fall racing be abandoned in Kentucky the interesting question arises as to how the deficiency in the fund will be met General Manager John Hach ¬ meister of the Latonia and Douglas Park Jockey Clubs states that racing or no racing his associa ¬ tions will contribute their proportionate share of the pledge and will also make good any deficiency iu the fund so far as his employees are concerned concernedIt It is presumed that this will bo the attitude of the other racing associations of Kentucky too But the amount assigned to the owners of racing stables has been only a little more than half realized and unless there is a substantial amount of racing in Kentucky this fall there will be a considerable deficiency to meet on the owners share of the big fund fundTho Tho allotment of the owners was based on the usual distribution of something like 750000 in stakes and purses during the season and if racing is abandoned or even curtailed to any considerable extent there is bound to bo a deficit hi the amount that will be raised from this source The amount assigned to the owners was based on the usual fall program of something like fifty days o racing
