FRENCH POILUS WILL GET INSURANCE The French poilus who at the Marne saved Paris and the world and were paid only a penny a day for their services are now to receive slightly better financial treatment Au insurance law has been brought before the French Chamber of Deputies which will give eacli soldier a small compensation at the end of the war or will compensate his heirs if he is killed The insurance offered will be small as compared with the 10000 policy the Yanks can take out but on the other hand the policy will be given to each soldier without requiring him to pay premiums It would in fact be impossible for the poilu to meet an insurance premium out of his present pay The pcnnyaday wage of the opening months of the war was later increased to five cents a day and has been still further increased since It remains however about a fourth of what the Yanks are getting The proposed law will grant to each soldier serving at the front a policy of 200 and to each man called for service behind the lines a policy of 100 These policies will be payable to the soldiers heirs within a month after his death if tho soldier survives the insurance will be paid to him within three months after tho end of the war if lie can show that it will be used for necessary purchases in connection with the resumption of his trade or profession The French consider the pro ¬ posal to be at least a step in the right direction small us the coiupcnsutiou is
