RACING GOES ON IN WESTERN CANADA Sport Conducted Kinus the Mutucls Prince Phils thorpo Wins Saskatoon Derby DerbyCalgary Calgary Alberta Canada July 29 Wliilo racing has boon suspended in eastern Canada sucli is not the case in this part of tlio Dominion For the sec ¬ ond successive year the Saskatoon Derby the most important event in western Canada as times go has been won by a western Canadianbred horse This race is at one and onequarter miles and of the value of 700 The field of nine which went to the post on July 17 included Prince Philsthorpo which after wintering In Havana had returned to the land of his birth Prince Philsthorpes ilam was sold at the dispersal sale of the stud of W S Henderson V S of Brandon Manitoba in December 1903 at which time she was carrying the Prince and the mare having died after foaling the colt was raised on the bottle He has boon a shifty sort of horse having won in his day such an important event as the Durham Cup one and threequarters miks at Woodbine but on this occasion he had to give way to a younger westernbred by name Sharp ¬ shooter by Six Shooter five years old which after being reserved in the early running came away a quarter of a mile from home and won in the good time of 212Vi for a half mile track Sharpshooter which is a racy looking brown gelding has won four straight races on the western Canadian circuit and has not been defeated this year Other wellknown horses in the field for the Saskatoon feature were omul Toastmaster Bonnies Buck and Belle of the Kitchen KitchenThe The circuit commenced at Calgary on June 29 where four races were given on eacli of the four days of the meeting On June 29 Sharpshooter captured the Alberta Handicap confined to Alberta breds in 14 The twoyearold race was won by Chandelier by Chanter Ayrshinj Jodel with Freda T by Yorkshire Lad second biit this form was re ¬ versed at Edmonton where Freda T won with Chandelier second while at Saskatoon Freda T again won with Chandelier third As Freda T also won a four and onehalf furlong race at Cal ¬ gary which Chandelier did not contest this puts Yorkshire Lad again at the top of our twoyearold form such as it is isCROWDS CROWDS SMALLER THAN USUAL USUALA A son of Ostlor Joe in the threeyearold Hustler Toe has run consistently throughout the circuit netting being at present illegal in Canada the mu tuols jit Calgary were shuttered and closed pre ¬ senting a dismal aspect and the crowd in the stands was smaller than usual while the youngbloods who usually swarm round the machines were absent still the racing was good and it was apparent that the 200 and 300 purses meant something to the contestants On the last day particularly some good racing was seen and Prince Philsthorpe scored over a mile from Bonnies Buck Viso by Vitez and others At Edmonton the capital of the Province of Al ¬ berta was run the only race really justifying the name of Derby this being the Edmonton Derby for westernbred threeyearolds run over a mile and this was taken by Yowoll by Yorkshire Lad Winnie Wells while two sons of Ostler Joe in Fort McLcod and Hustler Joe both owned by John Franklin ran second and third Mr Franklin is the largest breeder in the province and on commenc ¬ ing breeding some years ago brought Ostler Joe from California Ostler Joe is now dead Other winners at Edmonton were Toastmaster Sporting Life Chantonr Volma the latter an imported mare and Gomul GomulOne One wellknown horse which was missed this year was Marcus by Bitter Root which has been a regular attendant in the west for the past several years He won the Saskatoon Derby four year running and was third last year but was since sold to go down east somewhere In his absence his owner 7 D Ferguson in his home town Saska ¬ toon won a race with Foeman by Fariman which like Marcus has carried his owners colors at meet ¬ ings away in the sunny south not unsuccessfully The stands at Edmonton and Saskatoon were better filled than at Calgary CalgaryThe The racing is continuing in the west at fairs and exhibitions scattered throughout the country
