THE MOUND OF DEATH After the Germans wearing Scotch kilts tricked the brigade that was holding the mound and routed them our general took us out to recapture the mound said Tracy It was night The rille brigade went out tirst and ran into a nest of Ger ¬ man machineguns We came next and the ma ¬ chineguns got us also Our machineguns were turned onto the mound but we soon discovered that the Germans were hi St Eloi itself A signal was given to the nightrocket men to illuminate the town They sent white rockets into the air and by this light we fought through the streets of the village It was handtohand fighting we couldnt use the machineguns We lost plenty of men but the German dead were piled in the streets Both sides used dead bodies for barricades I saw heaps of Gorman corpses you had to jump over them as you ran about All the time the white rockets were lighting the streets and electric hand torches Dick ¬ ered in alleyways back yards and emptied houses as the manhunt for Germans continued AVe took St Eloi before dawn every German left in it was dead Ajid then we got the uiuimd into our own hands again Everybodys
