PROGERMAN TORTURE SOCKS Red Cross headquarters at Springfield has just exposed an ugly series of tricks and devices which proGerman citizens have been attempting there in fruitless efforts to injure the American cause The meanness of some of these people has gone so far as the deliberate knitting of socks with knots and strips of wool so arranged that they would quickly cripple the feet of any soldier who wore them Fortunately this work was promptly dotectud and thrown out by the inspectors and the Red Cross authorities at Springfield and elsewhere are standing constantly on the alert for all low tricks like this thisIs Is the public on watch with equal keencss This is a question which the official Springfield state ¬ ment makes pertinent Aside from such acts as the knitting of torture socks the proGermans it appears are ever active in spreading fraudulent stories of a kind which they hope will prejudice gullible Americans against the Red Cross More than one story of socalled mismanagement of fool ¬ ishly strict regulations can doubtless be traced to this source The Springfield statement proves that they can be by citing several concrete ex ¬ amples It concludes with the counsel When you hear one of these stories turn on the one who is telling it and demand llow do you know How do you know that is soV This counsel is of the utmost importance and should be followed by even American who does not wish to be led around by the nose a credulous victim of insidious German intrigue Boston Transcript
