HORSES PLAY AT FOLLOW THE LEADER LEADERMishaps Mishaps in Jumping Event a Sample of What Can Occur in a Race Saratoga Gossip Saratoga N Y August 14 An object lesson was witnessed in the steeplechase run here last Friday showing how yrone horses are to follow each other and do practically what the other fellow did as it were There were but three starters in the nice Robert Oliver Reddest and Early Light and all went well until coming to the Liverpool when Reddest which was in the lead bolted boltedThe The other pair were close on his heels and when they saw Reddest duck to the inside of the fence they did likewise all three being in a close mix up for a few seconds They were soon straightened out and resumed the race Approaching the same fence again Rolwrt Oliver which was then in the lead took the obstacle cleanly but Reddest again bolted and Early Light evidently believing lie had to do the same tiling followed him The latter iair was now so far out of the race that Robert Oliver fin ¬ ished alone aloneThe The Incident was one that patrons of racing will do well to remember as it was an ocular demonstra ¬ tion of what horses will sometimes do in races Many a time a horse has been practically lapped on a leader or within three parts of a length of him when the leader would make a wide turn The cry immediately arises that the leader is carrying his dangerous opponent out This at times is a mistaken deduction It is simply a follower following a leader identical with the actions of Robert Oliver and Early Light when they both followed Reddest as he ducked away from the Liverpool in Fridays race raceJust Just to impress the matter on the minds of the newer generation of racegoers Early Light re ¬ peated the performance the second time around and it probably is as well that he did as it will make the patrons of racing more careful in criticising the running of a raco and condemning a rider for an in ¬ fraction faultIn of the rules when he is not at fault In conversation with Morton Schwartz after the defeat of his good filly Enfilade in the Alabama Stakes he could give but one solution for the dis ¬ appointing race of Enfilade EnfiladeShe She is a filly said he which must be per ¬ mitted to get into her stride in lite first part of the nice and then taken up under a steadying hold Under this treatment she will run truly otherwise she gets tangled up and does not run naturally It was the first time Lyke had ridden the filly and in his efforts to get a commanding lead hustled lier away and at no time did she get into racing action She had not gone a sixteenth before 1 knew he was running sixes and sevens and that her chances of victory were slight slightLyke Lyke kept hustling her as any rider would do when being closely pressed and after Eyelid passed her the rare was practically over I am not making any excuses it was only one of those incidents which will happen in races when horses have to be ridden just one way and their disposition catered to toI I have not yet conceded that Eyelid is a superior filly to Enfilade They may meet again iu the near future and the result of Fridays race may be re ¬ versed versedJefferson Jefferson Livingston hasnt had much luck with his stable so far since they came in this direction but he has not jf t shown hie best performers Colonel Vcnnie is working exceedingly well and will be sent out next week along With others of the Livingston stable John I Day too will no doubt show lie is a better colt than his Fridays race in ¬ dicated lit is supposed to like a long route but he exhibited speed with sprinters in his recent exhibition He ran as if better tilings are mapped out for him j
