THE NEW INTERNATIONALISM Professing internationalists have been defined sis a class who love every country except their own but the war with its alliances and understandings is bringing about another and vastly better inter ¬ nationalism an internationalism which makes love of country and love of mankind inarch together Today the United States is as much concerned in obtaining freedom for other countries as in con ¬ serving its own and in that sense all Americans ire internationalists Good and worthy as it is to lay down ones life for ones country it is still more so to make the sacrifice for mankind mankindBecause Because of the fact that many of our sons are doing that on foreign soil and of the principles and ideals for which this countrr entered the war we will see to it that they have not made tiie great sacrifice in vain We will finish the work which they began by winning the war beyond the shadow of doubt or disputation disputationInternationalists Internationalists of the old breed will be get ¬ ting to work with the rest of the pacifist crew when it is seen that the allies are well on the road to victory We shall hear the old shibolcths of the brotherhood of man and shall be told that the Germans are both men and brothers From Germany itself will come plaintive and almost despairing appeals for mercy and forbearance Tiie people will declare their willingness to do everything short of breaking up the existing German state in order H admitteil to the confraternity of niiti ms from which they have IHHII excluded The ears of the ullieVtliillst be closed however t all appeals until the leaders of Germany throw down their swords and admit themselves beaten casting themselves on the mercy of those whom they have wronged Xew York Herald
