NOW FOR BANNER LATONIA MEETING Season of TwentyOne Days Expected to Be Best in History of That Course Cincinnati Ohio October 5 Western racing is about to enter upon its last lap for the season of 1918 With the Lexington Douglas Park and Church ¬ ill Downs meetings a matter of history only Lato nia remains to claim the attention of patrons of the great sport of thoroughbred racing in the west The Latonia meeting overshadowing all other western racing ip point of importance is scheduled to open on Thursday next and continue for twentyone rac ¬ ing days closing on Saturday November 2 It will be participated in by the same horses owners and jockeys who have been patronizing the meetings that have preceded it on the Kentucky circuit this fall together with some additions from the east attracted by the unprecedentedly rich purses that will be a notable feature of the racing at Latonia this fall fallIt It is confidently expected that the Latonia meet ¬ ing will be a recordbreaker so far as western fall racing is concerned if weather conditions are at all favorable The meeting is expected to start off in better style than usual as one result of the interim of four days between the closing of racing at Louisville today and the opening at Covington The interval will iwrmit the convenient transfer of all the stables from Louisville in time for participation in the opening day program and the inaugural card will doubtless be the better for the ample time be ¬ tween meetings which was allowed with just such an idea in view viewGeneral General Manager John Hachmeister has been on the ground for several days following the close of the Douglas Park meeting making preparations for the opening Patrons of the sport will find everything one hundred per cent complete on opening day The well appointed home of the Latonia Jockey Club so picturesquely located amid the hills of northern Kentucky just across the Ohio from this city is already in perfect order for the inaugura ¬ tion of the meeting The track itself is in par ¬ ticularly good condition having been resurfaced during the summer by Superintendent Charles Nolte and otherwise improved Nolte who is an expert in the care of a race track declares that the course will this fall be as safe and fast as that at Douglas Park which was brought to such a high state of perfection under his direction Nolte is now exercising supervision over both the Douglas Park and the Latonia tracks Besides the reselling of the track other improvements were carried out at Latonia during the summer interim including the rehabilitation of the drainage system and the reroofing of many of the stables stablesRACES RACES TO START AT 145 P M DAILY DAILYThe The arrangements for the approaching meeting will closely follow those so successfully employed during the wonderfully successful spring meeting at this track An exception is that the first race will be run daily at 145 oclock in order to allow patrons of the sport to reach their homes before dark It is customary to begin racing earlier in the fall season than in the spring on account of the shorten ¬ ing days and Manager Hachmeister has gone even further than usual this fall in this respect as an experiment in response to a seeming demand for an early schedule It is hoped to finish the program each afternoon by 430 oclock at the latest latestThe The officials for the meeting will be identical with those in charge of the recent meeting at Douglas Park and will Include all those who have been accustomed to serve at Latonia with the ex ¬ ception of W H Shelley whose place as judge will be filled by S C Nuekols Jr and as clerk of the scales by Julius C Reeder Messrs Nuckols and Reeder discharged the duties of the positions mentioned with the utmost satisfaction at Douglas Park As usual Judge Charles F Price will pre ¬ side in the stewards stand and with the assistance of Associate Steward Capt Thomas 1 Clay will exercise the same vigilant supervision over the details of racing that has been applied in the past pastThe The big feature of the Latonia opening will be the running of the Latunia Autumn Inaugural Handicap og 3 00 added This is a race of one mile and one sixteenth for threeyearolds and over for which there are thirtythree eligibles including Handler Lucky H Bribed Voter Beaverkill Precious Free cutter Fruit Cake Manager Waite Fern Handley FauxCol Viva America King Gorin Big Smoke Sasin Tumbler Golding Exterminator Violet Bon ¬ nie Blackie Daw Ocean Sweep Fell Swoop Colonel Veniiie Olive Wood Sands of Pleasure Buford Basil Sous Marine Butterscotch II Jas T Clark Troilus Jolireu Cheer Leader and Opportunity It is expected that the field for this race if the track be fast will number eight or ten of the first dozen named abiiye The weights for the race will be announced on Monday by Racing Secretary Campl ell Several overnight races of outstanding attractiveness and value will likewise embellish the opening day card and serve to give the meeting an auspicious sendoff sendoffMuch Much interest attaches to the appearance at Latonia of Jerome B Resspess Last Coin It is the consensus of opinion among observing horsemen that Last Coin will turn out to be the king of the sprinting division in Kentucky this fall Good judges declare him capable of greater things than he lias yet accomplished since Mr Respess brought him back to the races at Churchill Downs a few days ago after an absence of several years from racing He has only one stake engagement at La ¬ tonia that being in the Autumn Selling Stakes of one mile It is hardly likely that he will fill this engagement on account of the selling conditions attached to it So it may be taken for granted that the speedy son of Ultimus and Half Crown willbe restricted to overnight races during the remainder of this season If he continues to train on aiid goes into winter quarters in sound condition it is altogether likely that he will be raced again next year and named for all the important events of Kentucky racing
