NOTED ENGLISH JOCKEY A WAR VICTIM Fred Bickaby Dies from Wounds Received in Battle in France FranceWe We much regret to learn that Frederick Rickaby Jr the wellknown jockey upon whose services Lord Derby had first call has succumbed to wounds received in action in France We understand he was fatally wounded when forming one of the crew of a tank The decedent who was born at Newmarket in 1894 and was married a few years ago to Miss Griggs a sister of the two jockeys leaves two children and much sympathy will be felt with the widow as well as with his father arid mother who are greatly respected in Newmarket NewmarketYoung Young Rickaby came ofa raceriding stock his father being a prominent jockey some years ago who rode the winners of many important races while his grandfather was also a jockey more closely identified howevor with steeplechasing than flat racing In 1909 Rickaby was apprenticed to the Hon G Lambton and though transferred to Felix Leach his indentures were again taken over by his original master During his apprenticeship he made quite a name for himself proving a capable chip of the old block In that year lie rode five winners and had his first successful mount on Lord Derbys Marchetta in the Breeders Plate at the Newmarket Craven meeting when he upset the odds of 5 to 2 on Last Call which was ridden by Frank Woottou From 1909 on Rickaby compiled a great winning record showing con ¬ spicuous ability in the saddle and one of the most sensational victories he achieved was when on Mr Beddingtons Magic in 1910 lie bowled over the 20 to 1 bet on Bayardo for the Goodwood Cup The defeat of Mr Cox then racing ag Mr Fairie colt was undreamt of especially with Maher in the saddle but that redoubtable horseman did not ride a good race and reserving his finish until too late Rickaby snatched the verdict by a neck In that year Rickaby had no fewer than 41C mounts arid won fifty races over all sorts of icoiirses and for various owners He met with uniform success in subsequent years and in 1914 again had fifty wins to his credit In 1915 he won thirtysix races but since that date in consequence of the war he in common with other jockeys found his opportu ¬ nities greatly curtailed In 191C he only had seven ¬ teen wins and last year twentythree During the present year his duties in die army prevented him i following his vocation and he only appeared in the I saddle on one occasion when he was beaten into second place A considerable number of prominent events fell to Rickaby s share during his all too brief career They include the One Thousand Guineas in which he particularly distinguished him self for he won that race four times in 1913 on J B Joels Jest in 1915 on Lord Rosetierys Vau cluse the following year on Lord DerbyJs Canyon and in 19i7 on Lprdv i Abernons Diadem The Oaks he also won in 1913 on JestrrLondon Sports
