SISTERS WHICH WERE GREAT RXCERS Turf but Were Failures at theSttid There have been sonie brilliant performers among the fillies of the last thirty years Among the good ones may be included the sisters Memoir and La Fleche by St SimonsQuiver and both bred at the royal stud at Ilanipfoii Court ibngsmce donevavay donevavaylwith lwith but happily replaced by the similar but private establishment at Sandringham Botltwero soldi as yearlings one to the Duke of Portland who owned the sire the other to Baron de Hirsch Memoir ran three times as a twoyearrold before earning brack ¬ ets but finished up well by winning in succession the Bradford Plate at Leicester and the Zetland jarid Prendcrgast Stakes at ewriiarke without how ever leaving the impression of being anything out outof of the common Next year she did much better Timl after running runningsecond second to her stable companion Semolina with which the duke declared to win the One Thousand Guineas she won the Newmarket Stakes beating Blue Green and Le Nord and then the Oaks from Signorina with Semolina uvplacpd tlm i turjiingjthe One Thousand form upside down At Ascot the erratic Surefoot beat her comfortably lii tlie Prince of Wales Stakes but an easy task awaited her with nothing better than Star to beat in the Nassau at Goodwood and at her next appearance sfie easily accounted for the St Leger LegerAmphion Amphion was too good for her in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket where a success in the Oaks did not count for much and the July Cupwasher only winning hit as a fouryearold This was n great record but Memoir was not so good a race horse as La Fleche which as a yearling fetched the huge price of 5500 guineas teing knocked down to Lord Marcus Beresford As a twoyearold La Fleche trained at Kingsclere was undefeated win ¬ ning the Chesterfield Stakes at Newmarket the Layant and Molccomb Stakes at Goodwood and finally the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and among her victims in these races were the prospec ¬ tive winners of the Two Thousand Guineas Bona vista and the Derby Sir HugoJ WINS EIGHT OUT OF NINE EACES EACESIn In the following year she ran nine times and was only beaten once namely by the 40 to 1 chance Sir Hugo for the Blue RibaniL Meanwhile jihe had won the One Thousand Guineas easily from The Smew but when they met a ain tyrasonlyj 4 y shortest of heads she beat A Jnmes filly After that it was all plain sailing as she won the Nassau Stakes and revenged herself on SirHugo by easily beating him in the St Leger Although her senior by a year Orveito had no chahce wlth La B echc for the Lancashire Plate npr cdjnld ipunure make her gallop in a singlehanded bout for the Grand Duke Michael Stakes and following a benefit in the Newmarket Oaks came Jier ceoifning effort In the Cambridgeshire for which she Started favorite in a field of thirty and carying 122 pounds ac ¬ quitted herself of a fine performance by giving thirtyfour pounds and an easy beating to Pen ¬ sioner This was a fitting windup to a splendid season blotted only by her fluky defeat at Epsom Then came her removal with Baron de Hirschs horses to Egcrton House and a next appearance in the Eclipse Stakes when she was bpaten by Ornie a former stable companion and Medicis and the form was confirmed when the Duke pfjAVestnilnsters good horse gave her seven pounds and a neck beat ¬ ing at Goodwood She could only get a third to Raeburn andIs4flglassfor thefcsncasftire Plate but won thetbwtherStakes at tlie Second 5ctober meet ¬ ing and was then unplaced mider lSS i pojmds for the Cambridgeshire but ide aiuen by jginning the Liverpool Cup under 134 pounds in fine style styleHer Her last race that season was run through a sea of mud on the old Trafford course when she was unplaced when giving thirtytwo pounds to Golden Drop for the Manchester Nveinbir Hanilicab SIie ran four times as a fiveyearold and won the Ascot Cup in hollow fashion from the French mare Callistrate and the Champion Stakes from Ravens bury but Sir C D Roses horse beat her for the Hardwicke Stakes when odds of 5 to 1 were laid on the mare She was a strong favorite for the Prince Edward Handicap but could 911 get fourtl in a tight finish with Clwyd AVorcester and Senipronius In spite of her many fine racing points Le Fleche was not a handsome mare in api earance and unless trained as thin as a herring she never ran up to her true form but she was a sterling bit of stuff and of far beyonU average ciafcs It is strange that two such mares as Memoir and La Fleche should have been failures at the stud The former went to Welbeck and never produced a race horse of any note besides which was seven times barren She died in fouling ten1 years ago La Fleche in foal to MorlunJHvas1 sblil ihsoriiewhat sensational circumstances to Sir Tattou Sykes for 12000 guineas after the death of Baron de Hirsch and was then nine times barren Once she pro ¬ duced dead twins and twice was not covered but some of her yearlings fetched extravagant prices while the only one that ever earned distinction on a race course was JolihOGauiit yigllaht In London Sportsman
