LAUREL NEEDS A NEW PRESIDENT Senator Johnsons Place Hard to Till Edward E McLean May Succeed Him New York November 30 The death of ExSena ¬ tor Richard Johnson at his home in Maryland recently has caused a vacancy on the directors board of the Laurel track Ever since the present organization of the Maryland institution has con ¬ trolled the late senator was the president and one of its hardest workers His chair will be hard to fill owing to his popular standing in the com ¬ munity Within the past year or two Mr Johnsons death makes the third memlier of the association to pass away the other two being Schuyler Par ¬ sons and T J Dwyer Manager Matt Winn was too much overcome by the death of Mr Johnson to say much regarding the future of Laurel or who would fill the place of the late president Dick Johnson was one of the finest men one would wish to meet said Mr Winn His dentil is a sad blow not only to his highly esteemed family but everyone who knew him Naturally the subject of electing another president has not yet entered the minds of the stockholders there being plenty of time for such a proceeding t only hope we can presidentOne find someone as able us our late president One or two of the stockholders of the Laurel institution however have asked the question among themselves Who shall we get The name of Edward B McLean has been spoken of favorably among them he being a prominent and wealthy Washingtonian with influence and social standing as well as being an enthusiastic horseman and the proprietor of the Washington Post and Cincinnati Enquirer lie acted as one of the stewards at the recent meeting at Laurel and filled the position well The principal stockholders in Laurel arid who will decide the question of the next president are Price McKInney KxrCongressniau George W Loft James Butler Colonel Matt Winn and Thomas Mohahan It is not probable however that any action will be takeu at present ou the election of president
