MARE THRIVED WITH WOODEN LEG F W Allen a wellknown Australian breeder tells the story of a woodenlegged horse He de ¬ clares that a thoroughbred mare named Jewess which raced in Australia as far back as 1856 fell in one of her races and broke her leg According to Mr Allen the break was just below the knee and her owner and his friends straightaway treated her and finally fitted her with a wooden stump Mr Allen states for some time afterward he remem ¬ bered thu mare in the yard of one of Adelaides chief hotels where she was in charge of a special boy She seemed healthy and strong and hobbled about in great style with her wooden leg An effort was made to breed from her but Mr Allen has no records in this respect A couple of other old timers have vouched for the statement that the mare with the wooden leg lived for many years and was quite an attraction at the Napoleon Bonaparte Hotel where she was quartered One of them goes so far as to state that she had a foal but there is no confirmation of this in the stud book
