STORY OF A REMARKABLE GIFT HORSE How the Mare Roxane Repaid John F Offutts Faith in Her Ability AbilityLexington Lexington Ky December 2 John F Offutt brother of Mrs Ella Offutt Pepper widow of the late Col James E Pepper who left Lexington this week to spend the winter in Florida has the Jistinction of having accomplished more with a gift horse than any other man of this day and time Here is the story as related by him and substan ¬ tiated guidesThere by the racing guides There was foaled at Mfaelowthorpe Stud in 1897 U chestnut filly by Perblaze son of St Blaise and Perhaps dam Ondina daughter of Onondaga and Bliss by Bonnie Scotland The following year Mr Offutt broke her at the farm named her Roxane and Eugene Leigh who then was training the Pepper Stable horses took her to Louisville the fol ¬ lowing spring Leigh couldnt get her to run fast so back to the farm she went Col wentCol Pepper sent her but to Lew Elmore who was training In the east Back she came again Elmore declared she was impossible In 1900 Offutt persuaded Pepper to give her another chance and he was sent to Charles Anderson who was handling the Pepper string at the Kentucky Association track Anderson took Rbxone to New Orleans but did not start her When he returned to Lex ¬ ington she was again turned back All backAll during the winter of 19001901 Offutt gal ¬ loped Roxane and in the spring of 1901 when she was a fouryearold took her to the Kentucky Association track and worked lier threeeighths in He tried to persuade his brotherinlaw to jive her another chumre but he declared he would lay no more bills on Roxane You may haves ier as a gift from me said Col Pepper and if vou have confidence In lipr and it is agreeable to rit Davis you may send her along east with our string stringDavis Davis took her with him to New York In her first two starts she was beaten by narrow margins The third time she won That year she went to the post seventeen Jimes won five races was sec Mid in five and third in two earning Offutt 3940 net In 1902 as a fiveyearold Roxanc developed into i handicap mare She made six starts in Offutts twnership winning three being second twice and third once The American record for one mile and an eightbiit that f iine was 151 having been made by Jonnibert She beat Bonnil ert in a mile and an eighth in 151 titBrighton Bench in July ami a few days later P Ryan of California paid 7000 at auction or Roxane She won him two races in three starts and at Sheepshead Bay on Futurity day Ryan sold her at auction to Stephen Sanford Son for 10000 Dr J N Rainey being the con ¬ tending bidder She ran twice second for her new nvncrs pulling up lame in her last race which was it Brooklyn September 18 1902 1902At At Hurricana Stud she was mated with Isidor ind produced Qoblesklll a winner for five seasons Che second best of her get was Lucius and her two rearbid BroomstickShe is Scrub Lady by Broomstick She made Offutt about 15000 in less than two years
