WHY OLD MARE TIPTOE WAS PURCHASED Sentiment as Well Hope That She May Produce a Real Star the Reason LEXINGTON Ky December Hi Out of Major August Belmonts consignment to the annual breed ¬ ers side here fhe Friday following Thanksgiving Day Billy Treacy bought for the firm of Treacy Walker the fifteenyearold brown mare Tiptoe by Hastings Tarpeia by Rayoii dOr for 50 When asked what prompted him to buy a mare of her age even at so low a price when there were much younger mares to be had Treacy said saidPerhaps Perhaps sentiment had something to do with my bidding but I know I got a bargain The first time 1 ever saw Tiptoe was at Shcepshead Bay Sep ¬ tember 10 1905 She was entered in the Ocean Handicap at one mile to carry 107 pounds I was much lighter in iwket than was her weight As I recall I had 55 and was looking for something in the nature of a longshot Tiitoe was quoted at 10 to 1 and the late Sol Liehtcifstein laid me 500 to 50 Tiptoe was in front all the way and I cashed She ran that mile in 138 defeating Xevu Lee by three lengths while behind them was Proper Oxford Inquisitor Inferno Coy Maid Good Luck Hienap and Kings Daughter DaughterI I had then no thought that I ever would again I see Tintoe but when she came into the sale ring I bid 50 with the mental reservation that she would be a bargain even at 1200 and intending to go to that figure for her but inasmuch as she seemed banen breeders would not bid on her and to my great surprise and satisfaction she was knocked ilowu to my one bid bidTiptoe Tiptoe is a grand individual and bears striking resemblance to her noted sire She won thirteen races was eight times second once third and only four times unplaced Her victories included the Gaiety Fashion and Brighton Produce Stakes and the White Plains Handicap and Ocean Handicap That makes her a highclass race mare At the stud she lias produced the winners Tipsand Single toe Typical and Tippler the lattej a twoyearold winner of three races this year yearIt It is true that she is fifteen years old but many of our greatest racers are from mares which were past that age For instance Fair Empress was sixteen when she foaled Exterminator Eu ¬ genia Burch was fourteen when she dropped Cudgel Anna Bain was fifteen when she produced Pif Jr I Blue and White was nineteen when Olambala came Braccsirdle was sixteen when she foaled The Man ¬ ager Salina was eighteen when she dropped Sal vator Miumie Gray was seventeen when the great Domino was born and St Angela was sixteen when St Simon first saw the light lightTherefore Therefore age will not prevent me from breed ¬ ing a real clinker but of Tiptoe Her dam is Tarpein 1 V Rayon dOr next dam Tarantella by Galopin and conies from the No 14 family that of Ballot ritimus Leamington Touchstone etc Watch me breed a real runner from Tiptoe
