ENTRIES IN THE FIVE ENGLISH CLASSICS CLASSICSSince Since the opening of the Great War entries to the important English stakes have closed each year as in antebellum times and have been declared off annually when it became apparent they corld not be run over their home tracks As matters stand now there is a good prospect that racing is to be resumed in 1919 at Epsom Ascot Doncaster and the other great tracks which have not been used for racing during a trying period It is due to the practice referred to that the classic races of 1919 were duly closed for entries at their appointed time the result being that the Two Thousand Guineas for 1919 closed with one hundred and eleven subscribers the One Thousand with ninetythree the Derby with two hundred and thirtyfour the Oaks with one hundred and ninety three and the St Leger with two hundred und thirtyone
