MARSHAL PETAINS THOROUGHBRED Soprtsmen will be interested to know that when Marshal Petain made his famous entry into Metz lie did so on a thoroughbred horse which was once well known on French race courses This was the steeplechaser Monsieur Monestyr By Edouafd III Grey Dawn II Monsieur Monestyr was bred by the Vicomte dOrleans and had an honorable career on the steeplechase courses particularly at Auteuil He was an excellent juniper of splendid temper and is a model in conformation He had previously run in the ownership of Mile Negroporites who subsequently became the wife of General Gregoresco the present Roumanian minister of war but at the outbreak of hostilities lie was acquired by General Varin and carried the latter throughout the cam ¬ paign at the head of one of the cavalry divisions
