TURF DEEDS OF A POPULAR RACE MARE Few people conversant with Chicago racing of the AVorlds Fair year have forgotten Maid Marian She was a great favorite locally and one of the stars that gave Chris Smith his brief high tide of pros ¬ perity Her speed was of the highest order and when the occasion arrived she demonstrated that she could stay far as well as run fast In the years that came after her track career she had a halfbrother gifted with the same great speed This was AlhinsiDale Maid Marian first raced for Lee Christy then for T C McDowell from whom she passed to Smith and thereafter raced as the property of the Kendall Stable Her twelve races won when a twoyearold at Chicago St Paul and Nashville were all purses Maid pursesMaid Marian was a highclass threeyearold She won the Milldale Stakes at Latonia from The Sculptor Gascon Alary Linger anl Quiver and the Merchants Stakes from Yo Tanibicn Newton and Miss Dixie At AVashington Park she won four purse races in which she defeated among others Ida Pickwick Diablo HucU McCaini Siinta Anna and liuiJo all crackerjacks Xu ran third to Helen Nichols and Dare Aehi for tlie Queen Isabella Stakes and was second to Morello in the most sensational AVheeler Handicap ever run At Haw ¬ thorne she won the Illinois Stakes from Hawthorne Morello and Ingomar In one of her race at AVashington Park she defeated the Brooklyn Han ¬ dicap winner Diablo at a mile and twenty yards in 140 and shared with Macy and Six Shooter the honor of holding the record at that distance Out of eighteen races that year aim won eleven and unplacedShe was but twice unplaced She was a good race marc in 1S94 and won at St Louis Washington Par Saratoga Jerome Iark and Nashville but till of her winning races were for purses In 1813 slie won eight races out of thirteen starts all overnight liandivays and con ¬ dition nurses She was killed by an accident in the fall of that year and the record of her achieve ments on the turf is as follows Maid Marian ch m 1890 by Great Tom Sudie SudieMcNairy McNairy Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1892 2 12 5 3 5875 1893 a 18 It 2 3 2 13375 1894 4 31 15 5 i 5 8270
