THIRTY THREE-YEAR-OLDS WHICH WERE THE LEADERS IN WINNING MONEY IN THE RACING CAMPAIGN OF LAST YEAR The thirty principal money-earning three-year-olds of 1918 were a fleet and sturdy band of young horses which will constitute a valuable addition to our handicap division of 1919. Some of them, such as Flags and Compadre, for instance, shone as sprinters mainly and perhaps are to continue in that capacity, but in Johren, Exterminator, War Cloud, Jack Hare Jr., Sunny Slope, Suu Rriar, The Porter, Violet Ronnie and some flthers lower down in the thirty list we And a band for which no distance has any terrors. The chief money-winner, Johren, i a stayer by inheritance. His sire, Spearmint, was the winner of the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prize of Paris and as such needs no certificate as to his ability to run far and fast in his racing days. His grandsire. Carbine, was one of the most wonderful stayers of any age or land, his feat of winning the Melbourne Cup at two miles in 3:2814 witli the welter weight of 145 pounds on his muscular back having no parallel. Sun Briar is a faster liorse at a mile and probably the fastest liorse in the United States at that distance. However, lie is not limited to a mile, as he demonstrated conclusively when lie won the Travers Stakes at a mile and a quarter in 2:03and and defeated Johren, War Cloud and Exterminator. There lias been talk of retiring him to the stud, but he is such a fine young horse that he should be given a chance to do further .great things in another year of racing. A suspicion of unsoundness attaches to Johren, Jack Hare Jr. and Escoba, but so far as is known Sun Rriar, Exterminator, War Cloud, Motor Cop, Sunny Slope, Eyelid, The Porter, Regal Lodge, Star Spangled and Troinne La Mort are unblemished in that way and are a hand that could make a race worth a long journey to view.
