LATEST METROPOLITAN TURF GOSSIP Jtoy Carruthers in Charge of New Pennsylvania Koiel Registrar W. H. Rowc Convalescing. NEW YORK. N. Y.. January 28. A delegation of horsemen, numbering from fifteen to twenty, visited the New Pennsylvania Hotel yesterday to pay their respects and extend congratulations to their old friend and associate, Roy Carruthers, who is in charge of New Yorks latest hotel. Mr. Carruthers lid not have much time for entertainment, but could not help recalling the days when he owned Hie good horse Howard Maun, the winner of the ltrooklyu Handicap in 1S97. Howard Mann ran in the colors of "Pittsburgh Phil" upon that occasion, he having bought the horse from Mr. Carruthers. Friends of Matthew Corlett will be pleased to learn that he is in better health than he has been in the past two years. The sickness which prevailed at the Belmont and Gravesend tracks among the help is abating. There is a rumbling around these quarters that the metropolitan racing season will not open here until May 19, which, if true, is three days later than the opening last year. The rumor could not e confirmed at the Jockey Club offices, Mr. Daingerfield being noncommittal on the subject. W. H. Kowe, the head of the registration office of the Jockey Club, has sufficiently recovered from his attack of influenza to visit his office occasionally.
