If P WHITNEYS BIG STABLE Establishment Comprises Forty three Head in Three Divisions Two Year Olds Number Thirty One Johren Star of Older Horses NKW YORK N Y March 20 Under the care of James Rowe t II P Whitneys Brookdale Farm Red Bank N J there are but twentyfive horses but there are two supplementary stables being looked after by Albert Simons at Benuing and Mose Goldblatt at Hot Springs In all there are in the Whitney strings fortythree horses with two designated as Mrs Payne Whitneys one listed under the Greentree Stable and one which belongs to L 8 Thompson whose colors were carried by some of the best horses of the day in the late nineties when the Thompson Brothers campaigned a large and worthy string Unquestionably H I Whitney has the longest string of twoyearolds being educated thirtyone in iiiunl cr This ex ¬ tensive stable is not at all unusual for Mr Whitney As the youngsters develop his orders are to sell unless there is a striking candidate for subsequent honors looms into prominence or that he retains some of the fillies for matrons matronsThis This is emphasized by the fact that Mr Rowe has only ten matured horses at Brookdale and Albert Simons but two The Ferryman and Hanky Panky a couple that have not yet gathered any grain for the stable Even in the threeyearold division there are some that have not been sent to the post notably Bayard and Headstrong both of which have been entered for some of the richer stakes to be run during the coming season There are but three thathave passed their threeyearold career Bor TOW which Is now eleven years oW Dominant a sixyearold and Johren now in his fourth year and the recognized champion of last year in his class though beaten several times in the early part of the season He afterward redeemed himself by winning the Saratoga Cup the Huron Handicap and running second in the Travers being beaten a head by Sun Briar after giving him six pounds In this race War Cloud was unplaced It was said that Johren left Saratoga a trifle dickey but Mr Rowe did not think anything serious troubled him Johren became almost an idol and patrons of racing hope he will be sent out again tills year to achieve even greater honors honorsWHITNEY WHITNEY THREE YEAR OLDS OLDSThe The threeyearolds in the Whitney band are headed so far as can be gleaned by Blue Laddie and Vindex though there are Bayard and Head ¬ strong that slept through the 1918 season Vexa ¬ tious is also a nonstarter but as she has not been noticed in the stakes already closed it is presumed she is not up to topnotch racing The other two however are mixed uy in pretty much all the threeyearold fixtures Had they not shown Mr Rowe something more than the ordinary he certainly would not have named them in stakes Bayard is a sot of Bayardo Miss Hamburg and Headstrong is by Polymelus Perverse both therefore carrying blood of illustrious sires Borrow is like the story of the good old wagon that done broke down For several lears lie lias carried the Whitney colors to victory in handicaps and stakes but his years are telling on him and while he still possesses gameness and courage he is weaker than he was three or four seasons back There is a race or two in him yet is Mr Rowes remark as he looks the old fellow over but the young horses are too much for him Dominant did not race last year but as lie is now doing his bit in the training camp it may be that Mr Rowe has decided to bring him out again againPigeon Pigeon Wing and Stickling are a couple of fil ¬ lies that did not advance much beyond the selling plate division but being a Hamburg and Broomstick respectively it is more than probable they are tabbed for farm service when they have raced an ¬ other year or two There is another filly missed from the list of those in training this is Cresson which gave great promise last spring but displayed weak underpinning and was retired after Saratoga She evidently has yassed beyond the training stage stageHIGHBRED HIGHBRED TWO YEAR OLDS OLDSThe The twoyearolds are mixed considerably in their breeding Broomstick figures frequently as the pater and lias about fiftyfive in regard to sex in the offspring though the fillies outnumber the colts a trifle Whisk Broom II is represented by five colts dams selected mares Besides these All Gold Peter Pan and Prince Palatine are listed the latter being the sire of a bay filly dam Matinee Besides Prince Palatine there are youngsters which can point to such noted European sires as Mae donald II Rabelais and Ecouen on their paternal side sideOn On paper the string appears to be a promising col ¬ lection and as it is customary for Mr Rowe to introduce two or three good ones eacli season it is not probable lie will deviate from the rule this year In the past lie has develoned such good horses as Cudgel Tippity Witchct Flags and other fleet horses which made themselves famous in turf his ¬ tory Mr Whitney either sells or races horses of his own breeding and is more than pleased when he sells a good horse to an outsider said Mr Rove They art bred t sell if what he con ¬ siders their real value is forthcoming Some day we may have another Broomstick or Hamburg and who knows but some day a Pretty Polly or Sceptre might be trotted out of Brookdale One of the additions to the stable is jockey Frank Robinson who will do most of the riding ridingFollowing
