SCOUTMASTERS OLD MARK BEATEN Dusky Eves New Record for Mile and Three Quarters in New Zealand MELBOURNE Australia February 20 In New Zealand faster time has been made than in Aus ¬ tralia at a half mile fiveeighths threequarters one mile and two miles and last week the Domin ¬ ion added the mile and threequarters to its records The horse responsible was Dusky Eve which in winning the Wangaiiui Cup of 5 XX ran the dis ¬ tance mentioned in 259 Last years Wanganui Cup was won in 301 by Client which also won in 1917 Tntil last week the record for the Wanganui Cup was the 300 put up by Master Lupin in 1915 1915As As a recordbreaker Dusky Eve calls for a little additional notice He is a sixyearold gelding by Signer Pilgrims Progress Ma Mie Rosette Swift and tiie New Zealand register does not show he raced until he was a fouryearold His solitary win at that age was the Okawa Hack Handicap and lust year the only time he got to the front was when with 105 pounds he divided tiie Harrison Hack Handicap with Henry Clay 130 pounds at Wanganui At the recent Manawatu summer meeting he was second to Nobleman 115 pounds in the Manawattt Cup one and onehalf miles and as at the same fixture he easily won the Presidents Handicap in 205 for the mile and a quarter it is improbable he was allowed to start at an outside price for the Wanganui Cup in which he only carried 101 pounds Depredation which ran second to him is by the Carbine horse Camp Fire and Menelaus third won the 1917 Xew Zealand Cup Signor sire of Dusky Eve held the Xew Zealand and Australian record of 353 for two miles and a quarter from 1908 until Harriet Graham cut those figures down to 353i in the Australian Cup of 1917 1917Scoutmaster Scoutmaster with 300 holds the Australian rec ¬ ord for a mile and threequarters The distance is an unusual one at Australian meetings and it was duo to that fact that Dumonts record of 301 in the Waverley Handicap at Kandwick in the spring of 1904 stood nntil Scoutmaster clipped a quarter second off it in tiie corresponding race in 1915 At that time the latter was seven years of age and last year he won a couple of races on the flat He is now being trained at Randwick by P Xolan with a view to hurdling The English record for a mile andthreefluarters is Pommerns255 atXewmarket alfdflie Ameri ¬ can best is Major Daingerfields 257
