SERGEANT MORTIMERS DEPENDANTS BALTIMORE Md April 29 AVhen Sergeant Mor ¬ timer J Murphy of the Three Hundred and fifth Machine Gun Batallion makes his expected return to this country within the fortnight he will be greeted by a committee headed by Archie Zimmer and J S Ownbey for both of whom he trained be ¬ fore his being called to the colors Morty as he is affectionately known among horsemen took ship for France a year ago and par ¬ ticipated in the fighting at Chateau Thierry and the Argonne Aroods with the Seventyseventh Divi ¬ sion From June 18 until the signing of the armis ¬ tice he was in the front line service The horrors of war have little evident effect on his inherent humor if his recent letters may be used as a criterion Since last November he has anticipated the hour of his discharge declaring that he would hike from New York to Maryland if he were for ¬ tunate enough to be returned during the southern season A walk of a few hundred miles would have little effect on him for he has been trained to enjoy that he wrote He has never ceased to be thankful for his diminutive size since the first hour of close fighting and credits it with his im ¬ munity When Murphy appeared for examination before his entrance in the army he was asked if he had any dependants Yes he replied Carlton G and Tie Pin which were two of the horses he had then in training for J S Ownbey
