FINE OUTLOOK FOR NEW YORK RACING All Early Indications Point to Stupendous Season on the Metropolitan Circuit NEW YOKK N Y May 8 Everything points to a stupendous racing season around New York this year Never before were the indications so pronounced Maryland has started the ball rolling with the most prosperous meetings in the history of racing in that state Not only have the crowds been large but the volumes of money that have poured into the machines has been practically a deluge Lack of accommodations only prevented nearly threequarters of a million dollars being handled at Pimlico on May 3 All these things tend to portray the outlook for the approaching New York season People at present are keen for sport of every kind The pent up sportive feelings of a long winter have been vented at the ball parks and race courses Last Sunday was the first offering of Sunday baseball in this state and 00000 lovers of the sport saw the games from the inside insideWhat What is in store in the way of material Un ¬ questionably one of the best band of threeyearolds that were ever trained in any one year are to race Usually in the spring there are two or three threeyearolds which stand out from the remainder This year there are nearly a dozen prospective stars Perhaps after two or three months racing there will be but two or three notables after the elimination process which will take place in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness It may be that some of the presentday stars will be dimmed by the achievements of those that did not shine so luminously as twoyearolds But tills is not probable though Johren last year was practically unknown until he had reached his third year and proved his superiority over Sun Briar War Cloud Jack Hare Jr and others which were looked upon as unbeateable threes H r Whitney may have another Johren in Vindex or Bayard or some other threeyearold that has wintered at Brookdale Then again there is a mighty filly in Regalo of the Gallaher stable She has loomed into such promi ¬ nence recently that she may develop into another Beldame or Regret RegretClass Class in the older division of handicap and stake horses is not far from the best standard though there jjre Cudgel Omar Khayyam Westy Hogun Roamer and one or two others of less note to provide con ¬ tests in the handicap as well as the threeyear olds so that the fixtures will have fair representa tion of tlie domestic anfl mrptrte lBtbckXittIe can be said of the twoyearolds at this time few having been uncovered either in Maryland or Ken ¬ tucky It may be that H P Whitney has a col ¬ lection of real good youngsters He has already shown several that have raced creditably But those from the Macomber Widener Coe Sanford Oneck Clark and other fashionable stables have not yet had opportunities opportunitiesThe The dearth of good riders is perplexing to most owners and trainers Really there are but few good horsemen in regard to ability outside Lottus and W Knupp Since the death of Frank1 Robinson they stand practically alone in the jockey world There arc possibly a half dozen which could be placed in the second class but they lack con ¬ sistency After Loftus and Knapp it is presumed that Sande Butwell Ensor Lyke C Robinson Rice and perhaps a few others might be relegated to the second division but on equal horses Loftus and Knapp would probably outride the others If this country was only as rich in good riders as it is in good horses the turf world would be better off
