BIG STEEPLECHASE RACE SATURDAY Green Spring Valley of 5000 Will Bring Together the Best Jumpers of the Country BALTIMORE Md May S There is every pros ¬ pect that a field of a dozen or fifteen of the best crosscountry horses in the land will take part in the renewal at Pimlico track Saturday of the 5000 Green Spring Aalley Steeplechase Potential start ¬ ers with their weights which were announced by handicapper Frank J Bryan on Monday are J E Griffiths The Brook 1 W pounds W R Coes Bet 152 Capt Ral Parrs Captain Parr 142 Bughouse 135 Le Marsouin 134 Royal Arch 133 and War ¬ lock 138 Cant Joseph E Davis Brooks 147 Ed ¬ ward M AVelds Belle o the Sea 134 H AV Max ¬ wells Decisive 135 Mrs Payne Whitneys Tetan 141 and Debadou 140 Joseph E AVideners Duet tiste IS Gen T A Buchanans Goldilocks and W F Knebelkamp 135 each William Smiths New Haven 138 and Capt II R A AVests Donny brook 135 These at any rnte are the jumpers eligible to start iu the Grwn Spring Valley that have been showing best at Havre de Grace and Pim ¬ lico in work and in racing racingTWO TWO of the probable starters Brooks and Bet are Manly Memorial winners Brooks won that 10000 special in the autumn of 1917 and Bet Avon last falls renewal The Brook top weight in the Green Spring Aalley was concededly the best cross conritry horse out last year if Bet did heat him a neck in the countrys greatest nice Debadou won last falls 3000 Elkridge SteenlecIIase for three yearold fencers and Bughouse was the contender Belle o the Sea a Arirginiabred daughter of Sea ¬ horse II Bello won the Junior Steeplechase at Pimlieo which was rim Just after the Elkridge was decided and Decisive was the contender contenderGOOD GOOD SHOWING OF THE BROOK BROOKMost Most of the steeplechasers have started this year and The Brook Tetan Le Marsouin Warlock and Royal Arch have won The Brooks performance in the Mr AAashington Steeplechase last Saturday was one of the best he ever showed and he Avill be one of tho choices if not favorite Bughouse made a capi ¬ tal showing against The Brook in the Mt Washing ¬ ton and Bet considering that she had not been in the steeplechase field since last fall did well to bring up third The best part of her performance iu the estimation of AV R Coe was the way she ran and jumped She raced kindly and took her fences on the run showing no inclination whatever to sidestep or refuse Mr Coe believes that the King James mare will go well throughout the year now that she has got through her first steeplechase so well wellWhile While the handicapper is conceded to have done a first rate job it is the opinion of shrewd observers that Dnettiste is in mighty well Tim Donohue and most of the other sharps were of the opinion last fall that Duettiste should have won the Manly Memorial A mistake at the last fence in the back field which put him in a pocket handicapped the son of Ethelbert seriously Nevertheless he came with a rush in the short run on the flat to finish third a neck behind Tho Brook which in turn was a neck behind Bet Duettiste unquestionably is the best steeplechaser in the stable of Mr AAridener and if he accepts on Saturday it may be taken for granted that he is fit to do his level best bestMrs Mrs Whitneys Tetan showed an excellent per ¬ formance in muddy going a week ago when he beat Goldilocks and Belle o the Sea in the Inaugural as did also Goldilocks and Belle o the Sea and Donny brook The latter an Irish fencer tired after going brilliantly for a mile and a half as though short Debadou had his preliminary in a flat race This brilliant brother of Leochares and Bromo has been schooling splendidly however There need be no fear that he will not know the course courseIf If only eight or nine of these good fencers start Saturday the Green Spring Aralley will be a steeple ¬ chase well worth seeing and is sure to bring out a representative gathering of hunt club devotees and admirers of the sport through the field
